The Value of Cannabis Before legalization, cannabis consumers didn’t have THC percentages listed on the side of the package. We judged quality through experience. How it looked, smelled, tasted, and the high itself. These sensory factors, along with the overall effect, defined the value we took from each purchase. Today, however, THC percentage has become the primary driver of price, pushed as a sales tool by many retail operations. This has placed immense pressure on cultivators to only grow high THC strains or risk being undervalued by retailers. With a lack of standardization for testing facilities, THC results can vary significantly between labs, prompting cultivators to seek labs known for higher numbers. As well as adopting practices to artificially inflate testing results. But there’s a richer side to cannabis than just one number. A plant’s full profile includes terpenes and other cannabinoids that interact uniquely with our endocannabinoid system, contributing to each cultivar’s complexity, effects, and character. For change to happen, responsibility falls on all sides: cultivators must focus on diverse strains that reflect the full spectrum of the plant; retailers need to value this complexity and educate customers on it; and brokers and budtenders play a key role as communicators. Their guidance on terpenes, cannabinoids, and overall experience can reshape how consumers choose cannabis. A shift toward valuing the complete plant experience would benefit everyone.
