As a screenwriter interested in querying, should you target managers or producers? It depends on the producer. Smaller producers are probably going to be more open to material than larger producers. Producers you reach through your network will be more open to your material than producers you cold query. In a competitive market, some writers want to try both avenues (both reps and producers) to see which works out first. The odds for either turning into a professional partnership are very slim. But they are not zero. *** If you're going to query managers or producers, make sure you write a query email that they will actually read! I've spent querying the good managers, but they're so busy. When some respond, they're either not interested or have other clients to worry about. And it's harder and harder to contact the smaller people who worked with the big producers.
Might as well add in self produced while we are at it. Odds could all be equal or one could say increase momentum.
Hi, Audrey! I chose to go the route of writing novels to showcase my high concept ideas. I still find myself in the same rut as screenwriters with it being ridiculously hard to get agents or producers or anyone to read my work. The main benefit is the book is mine and can make some money whereas a script is worth absolutely nothing if no one reads it. What is your opinion on going this route?
I heard you want to go for the producers first then the managers, agents, and entertainment lawyers.

4wHi Audrey, always great info. Would you be doing another course about writing TV pilots at Stage32 again soon?
