👉 Why do we need optical communications for space-to-space and space-to-ground connectivity? 👉 What technical and development challenges must we overcome to make satellite optical communications widespread in the coming years? 👉 What business and commercial barriers do we face, and which future markets might emerge or expand as a result? These were some of the questions we explored during the Optical Communications panel at Space Tech Expo Europe. It was a privilege (and it was fun!) to join a group of space agency and industry experts, including Belen Andres, Sven Rettig, Harald Hauschildt and Iraklis Hatziathanasiou, to discuss the advancements and opportunities in bringing satellite optical communications to the forefront of connectivity solutions. From addressing the growing demand for high-speed, high-security data transfer to developing scalable and cost-effective solutions, it’s clear that optical communications will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of satellite networks. This is happening already and there is no way back! I had the opportunity to share ODYSSEUS Space contribution with Cyclops™ solution to tackle these challenges. By providing an end-to-end, cost-efficient, subscription-based approach to optical communications, Cyclops™ simplifies the adoption of this technology and accelerates its integration into satellite networks. The discussion also highlighted the collaborative efforts needed across the space ecosystem—from satellite manufacturers and operators to ground station providers and regulators—to turn these challenges into opportunities. What are your thoughts on the satellite manufacturing supply chain in the UK? This was the topic of the lively panel discussion I moderated at Space-Comm Expo Scotland. Tom Walkinshaw was frank about the challenges of starting up a company and Prof. Dr. Lesley Jane S highlighted the R&D strengths in UK universities (albeit they are facing funding challenges). Daniel Bindel explained how UK companies contribute to international supply chains that address a range of customer demand, which Andrew Strain noted is increasingly for provision of a service rather than the technology itself. Joshua Broom pointed out that there are lots of views on the UK supply chain, but no single source of truth. The Space Partnership is trying to deliver just that. First we commissioned an infographic and now we are contacting all the companies listed to understand more. If you: feature on the supply chain and haven’t spoken to us yet; think your company should be on the infographic; or have thoughts on the UK supply chain for satellite manufacturing, do please get in touch (especially if you are going to be at #DefenceSpace24 this week).  The panel sparked a lively discussion and there were some great audience questions, so I have no doubt there will be plenty of views! Fraunhofer IIS opens laboratory in space #Radiation, #vacuum, and substantial #temperature #fluctuations: extreme conditions prevail in space, presenting a tough challenge for satellite communications. With the #Fraunhofer On-Board Processor (#FOBP), experiments can be conducted in space to explore whether new technologies are operational under real conditions. The FOBP passed its final tests last week and has begun its service on board the #Heinrich #Hertz #satellite of the #GermanSpaceAgency at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). #Satellitecommunications players are often faced with the fact that higher-performance technologies come into use only once their functionality has also been proven in space. This delays progress and limits the satellite industry’s innovation potential. To remove these obstacles, Fraunhofer IIS has opened the #FOBP, a laboratory in space equipped with a special feature: the satellite’s payload can be controlled from Earth at any time, even at an altitude of 36,000 kilo meters, and reprogrammed for different use cases. “You can think of it like a smartphone that installs updates to meet new demands,” says Rainer Wansch, Head of the RF and SatCom Systems department. The opportunities for the industry to use the experimental platform are just as diverse as satellite communications themselves. Their smooth operation depends on disparate elements coming together to form a seamless transmission chain. Such elements include the components installed in a satellite as well as the modems and antennas that enable communication from the ground.
