If you’re still acting like it’s 2021 as CRO or VP of Sales, you won’t have your job long. Remember in 2021 how VCs invested money in a category regardless of a business's fundamentals? What a time... This led companies to hire more and more salespeople to show growth over profitability. But, the business landscape has undergone a significant transformation from 2021 to 2024. In 2021: - Venture capital was abundant due to low interest rates. - Sales departments focused on growth over profitability, hiring rapidly and relying on the top 20% of performers. - Large investments and inflated valuations were common, leading to a "grow at all costs" mentality. This approach weakened sales teams. The emphasis on rapid growth left little room for developing the skills of mid and bottom performers. The larger business landscape has shifted gradually to where we are today. In 2024: - Higher interest rates have tightened capital availability. - The focus has shifted to profitability and sustainable growth. - Rapid hiring and firing are no longer viable; firing signals trouble and impacts the bottom line. In this new environment, depending on top performers is not enough. It’s essential to maximize the performance of the entire sales team.
