*** Resourcefulness in Action: Turning My Clunky Laptop into a Startup Powerhouse (yet another Update)*** I've been battling resource limitations for a while now. My trusty but clunky Pentium laptop has only 64 GB of storage, with less than 3 GB available. I had to maintain my computer every day—deleting tmp files, freeing up space and making the files OneDrive storage only storage, etc.—just to work on new projects. But last week, I hit a particularly rough patch. Unable to complete my Harvard CS50W assignment and build solutions for my business startup due to the said limitations, I decided to take on some gigs to earn extra cash and buy some decent equipment. One of these gigs was with Outlier.AI (I chose to work with them this time because of the change of management, a clear improvement). During a crucial test, my Visual Studio Code (VSC) didn’t load, and I had only 20 minutes to complete it. Feeling like I hit a brick wall, I decided to make a public appeal, asking if somebody could help me out. Unfortunately, perhaps due to reach limitations, nobody responded. I didn't wait for a response; instead, I sat in silence, thinking of a workaround. That's when I decided to make my laptop act as a thin client, essentially using it to connect to a more powerful virtual machine. I guess I got my answer after all! - Before: 1. Storage: running between 1.0 & 3 GB free storage on my Pentium laptop. (Sorry, tough times you see!) 2. Processor: Pentium (one of the most basic processors available, probably runs on hope and dreams) - Now: 1. Storage: 29 GB on my new VM (hello, extra space!) 2. Processor: Intel Xeon Platinum (this thing practically does my taxes) 3. Performance Gain: Approximately 13.44 times more processing power 3. Graphics: While it's harder to give an exact estimate for the GPU, the Xeon Platinum setup likely includes more powerful integrated or dedicated graphics compared to the basic integrated graphics on a Pentium laptop. By making my laptop effectively a thin client, I've begun to bypass the limitations I've been facing daily. This setup will allow me to complete my CS50W projects, work on my startup, and develop innovative software solutions that could secure funding for AI-powered solutions. Please don't laugh! Why? This seemingly little breakthrough is a game changer; it means I can now focus more on produce software solutions with the potential to earn me the funds I need to kickstart my business in style. I'm incredibly excited about this step because it represents a significant leap in my capacity to tackle ambitious projects.
