THERE IS NOTHING FISHY ABOUT TECH We need a Norwegian export council for tech, based on the recipe from the Norwegian seafood industry, which has its own export council. In short, that was my message to Jan Christian Vestre, Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, when I met him a few weeks back along with other founders. That advice has now been picked up by Shifter.no, a leading voice in Norway’s tech scene, and here is their story. While their coverage is in Norwegian, the message is universal: strong government support can be a game-changer for international expansion. Last week Vestre was appointed Norway’s new Minister of Health and Wellness, handing over his old department of Trade and Industry to Cecilie Myrseth. This doesn’t change anything, because regardless of who’s in office, the biggest challenge for any company going international is to open doors, and challenge number two is to be seen as a solid player. If you have Norway on your team, it strengthens your business. And equally important: The Norwegian population is one of the most tech-savvy in the world and adapts to digitalisation at a higher-than-average rate. This makes Norway a perfect sandbox for innovation that can be taken out globally. One of my key takeaways in the Shifter interview is that TicketCo went abroad a little too late. “We should have done it faster because we're selling business-to-business software. Norway was too small a market for us,” is one of my quotes. Another one reads like this: "I moved to London for a couple of years. Investor Henrik Lie-Nielsen said to me in an investor meeting – "I will not invest a penny unless Carl moves to London." I then made the decision in 30 seconds, moving away from my wife and two kids. They stayed in Bergen, whilst I commuted.” That was then, and this is now. TicketCo’s day-to-day life in the UK is in very good hands with David Kenny and the team. We’re doing great both in the UK and in our other markets, but we’re still at the start of our journey. Hopefully, we can be supported by the Norwegian Tech Council soon. It just needs to be established first. The Norwegian Seafood Export Council was established in 1991, established by the parliament and authorised by the Fisheries Export Act. In 2012, it changed its name to the Norwegian Seafood Council. It is owned by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, and is financed by a statutory market tax on all exports of fish and seafood. 85 people work for the Norwegian Seafood Council. That is 85 people who is working non stop for global success. #tech #fish #norway
