Cybersecurity is a top priority in 2024, as global regulations become stricter. The World Economic Forum reports that 60% of executives now see the value in cyber regulations to reduce risks—up from just 21% in 2022. October 17th marked the deadline for EU countries to enforce the updated NIS Directive 2, which aims to strengthen defenses against cyber threats by requiring exercises and secure IoT standards. This shift, along with the EU Cyber Resilience Act, reflects a global push to make hardware and software safer. These changes underscore the growing awareness that robust cybersecurity measures are essential for protecting critical infrastructure and adapting to new risks. #Cybersecurity #NISDirective2 #CyberResilience

The recently approved EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), coming into force in 2027, and the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark both aim to improve cybersecurity for digital products. However, I have some doubts about their effectiveness in truly informing consumers. The CE marking under the CRA signifies compliance with cybersecurity standards. For years, this label has represented safety, but EU consumers may not recognize the new cybersecurity component. Relying on a label alone to communicate these protections may lead to misunderstanding, especially since many consumers are not familiar with the nuances of cybersecurity. The Cyber Trust Mark in the U.S. faces similar challenges. While this label helps identify IoT products that meet minimum cybersecurity standards, it assumes that consumers will take the time to scan a QR code for more details. In reality, few may engage with this extra step, reducing its potential impact. Since the program is voluntary, consumers may mistakenly believe that products without the label lack security, when that may not be the case. Manufacturers will play a central role in educating consumers about these labels. However, manufacturers typically prioritize features like user-friendliness or innovative technology when marketing their products. Cybersecurity rarely receives the same attention, which may leave consumers without clear guidance on how these standards protect them. Another concern is that threats evolve quickly. A product that complies with the CRA today will probably face vulnerabilities tomorrow. Consumers who see a label might assume it guarantees long-term security, even though manufacturers may not provide long-term updates under the CRA. Finally, the CRA requires member states to enforce market surveillance to ensure compliance, but this enforcement mechanism might not be visible to consumers. Without a clear understanding of how these standards are maintained, users could misunderstand the level of protection these products provide. #cybersecurity #CRA #EU #FCC
