Last Saturday I was shopping for wedding shoes. As the sales assistant was signing me up for a rewards program she asked me what my surname will be once I’m married. I said “Pride”! We joked about why I want to keep my name – it is a good one! More importantly, I’ve been Kathryn Pride for my whole life. I often receive messages from candidates and clients who haven’t been in touch for a few years and who want to re-engage. Occasionally old friends reconnect. I wondered what sort of value I could attribute to having this consistent identity for such a long time. This post below gave me pause for thought for the same reason. It is straightforward to attach a value to moving jobs; a new compensation package will do that for you! Assessing the value of staying in place is less tangible, but no less valuable. I’ve been at Dartmouth Partners for just over 10 years and being at one firm for that time gives a similar sort of name recognition benefit. As I reflect on my tenure, there have been many highlights, but what stands out to me most are: * The trust that comes from working with the same team for a long time. This is so much more apparent when you’re in another country and time zone! * What you gain by staying put during the tough times. Learning from and having the opportunity to correct my mistakes. Persevering through bad markets and getting better together. Jane Fraser talks about measuring success in decades. This one has flown by, but the change has been profound! Excited to see what the next 10 years have in store!
Last week we hosted a different type of lunch club...one celebrating those who have been with Dartmouth for five years, and a good few extra for some! We are proud of the number of long-term employees we have across our teams. The faces in this photo joined our team at varying stages in their careers - some as fresh graduates straight out of university, some as founding members all the way back in 2012, and others as individuals looking to contribute towards getting Dartmouth to where we are today. A massive thank you to all of these individuals (plus the missing faces who couldn't make it) for such incredible contributions and being part of our journey throughout the years. We are looking forward to another five with you, and welcoming more new faces to the club! Advice to new Pepperdine grads: Creatively and intentionally develop purpose, service, and leadership in your work. It's possible to be a self-centered worker in the nonprofit sector, just as much as it's possible to be an accountant or marketing exec living out selfless service. Don't let assumptions about your industry or seniority limit your intentional cultivation and application of core values and character. What would you add? 💙🧡 🌊

It’s First-Generation Celebration Week! We’re spotlighting advice from first-generation faculty, staff, and students in the Purdue HTM - White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Here’s some guidance from Melissa Almanza, MPH, academic advisor: "As a first-generation college student, Purdue gave me ample opportunities to learn and grow. My best advice for students is to learn how to ask for help. Whether it’s from your professors, TAs, academic advisor, RA, or your peers, asking for help is the best way to connect with others and build your community of support. You are going to do great things on campus and beyond!"

It’s Grad Season! So, I attended my eldest daughter's Grade 6 graduation yesterday. It was my first-ever grad ceremony for my 2 girls, as they have been in the same school since they were both 18 months old. This marks 10 years for my eldest and a departure from the only school she has ever known while she takes that leap into the big unknown at a new school. Her new school will be such a big adjustment, and I just wish she had friends going with her. I know her outpouring of emotion was joy, fear, elation, trepidation, and all the other antonyms rolled into a big ball. Now, I’m not a big one for needing a graduation celebration at the end of every grade but graduating from your school is a big deal. It is a time for reflection and a time for aiming for your next goal. It's sad that we don’t have the ability to ‘graduate’ in the vacation rental industry. It’s difficult to define the steps in a vacation rental business to know what would define 'graduating,' but maybe the milestones goes a little something like this: 1. List your first property 2. Get your first booking 3. Sign on your first managed property 4. Hire your first full-time employee 5. Earn $1M in Gross Revenue Are you able to define your steps? Did you feel a big sense of accomplishment when you achieved each one? Did the next step seem scary? We have to make sure we set these graduations for ourselves. Celebrate the milestone and then dig in for the next ones. What's your next milestone?
