Are your field sales and field marketing teams talking? I mean calling each other daily and developing strategy together? And, are they talking at every level? When field sales and field marketing are in lock-step, you will see real growth and change in the market. I have never seen it be more effective than it was at KIND. Uniquely though, it formed that way from the very start. As part of the first team of field marketers hired in 2009, we were hybrid employees, splitting time between sales and marketing. We would show up to a store, share products and make small talk with the store team, merchandise, demo, share our success with a store manager, and ask for incremental placement or additional skus on shelf. ALL IN ONE VISIT. We did this 4-5 days a week. The more we showed up, the more trust we built, and it was reflected in both velocity and ACV. We targeted specific stores as market drivers, and identified others as needing a boost. When growth allowed the two field teams to gain deeper levels of leadership, communication ramped up. Everyone in the company was invested in the same sales-focused KPIs, so it made sense for the teams to meet and plan for their shared future. The system was designed that way, and it blossomed. Market managers were meeting daily or weekly, and leadership was building their joint strategies in the same room. Demo teams were still asking for more space and getting it. FS and FM managers were planning for promotional periods with store marketing teams. It was glorious and it worked.   It’s one thing to claim that field sales and field marketing are working well together, and it’s another if that counterpart is the first call you make each day.  

Story skills can build the relationships you need to get ahead in any role. As this story points out, focusing on audience and emotion is a great place to start. It involves listening, making an emotional connection, and thinking from the customer’s point of view.
