A £1.4m project is now underway to revolutionise the technology powering #electrified #railservices in the #UK and beyond. Led by #Hitachi Rail, DB ESG, University of Birmingham’s Centre for Railway Research and Education, and Turntide Technologies, the aim is to produce smaller and lighter battery packs to improve efficiency, while making these devices easier to adapt for different rail scenarios. Lithium-iron phosphate chemistry is at the root of the new equipment, which is now in development. It is hoped that if successfully brought to market, the new battery packs will prove to be a major win for Britain’s mammoth task of retrofitting old diesel engines to serve as electrified rolling stock in the future. The designs of many outdated and high emission models, with low floors and limited unused space, often make them difficult to reconfigure with cell power. And because upgrades are easier to complete, overall costs would fall significantly, further speeding up the process. Hitachi is already running trials in England’s #NorthEast and #NorthWest on Transpennine Express trains. Rolling stock diesel equipment has been swapped out for battery-electrical for the first time in UK history, reducing emissions and operational costs by up to 30%. The new battery technology in development could significantly improve on this, with cells coming in as 40% smaller and with 22% greater energy density. ‘This continuous improvement means we are always working on the next generation of smaller and more powerful batteries to reduce cost on railways by negating electrification infrastructure spend or removing diesel engines entirely,’ said Koji Agatsuma, Hitachi Rail’s Chief Technology Officer. Hitachi has already introduced its Masaccio battery hybrid trains in #Italy, cutting emissions by 50% against comparable vehicles. This achievement is considered to have been a watershed in decarbonisation of rail travel in #Europe.

🎇 Netcongestion: The power grid is increasingly overloaded. Electric vehicles can act as local buffers for the power grid, but for this to work, cars need to be able to discharge power and be distributed across various districts. And last but not least, under what conditions will car users accept that their car battery is not always 100% charged? 🚗 The so called Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technologies face some challenges. But Gonçalo Homem de Almeida Rodriguez Correia goes for it: “The buffering capacity allows better capturing of intermittent power generation such as solar and wind, while also contributing to shaving the peak consumption, when gas-fired power plants are often being cranked up to produce extra power.” 👩👦 That’s why he investigates people’s needs and habits. “A person is not going to muck up their daily schedule to connect their car to the charging stations at the most advantageous time.” The focus of the project is not on places which already accommodate a fair number of electric cars but on locations where electric cars are not a common feature. With a pilot project in Kanaleneiland, Utrecht, Gonçalo is going to investigate what it takes to let car owners participate in the scheme, or what is stopping them from buying or using an electric car. "Green Wheels": Sustainable buses in the changing landscape of urban transport According to ACEA, buses are the most widely used form of public transportation in the EU, accounting for over half of all public transport journeys. They have the lowest carbon footprint of any motorized transport, making them an essential public service and a significant contributor to decarbonization. Power components by Diotec Semiconductor play an important role when it comes to electric mobility in general and "green" public transportation in particular. Starting from dedicated bypass diodes for solar panels, which can be found nowadays not only on the roofs of bus depots but more and more on every bus stop shelter. While the huge PV installations on bus depots can charge up the bus fleet, the smaller ones at bus stops are used to light up the shelter at night and run passenger information systems. Charging stations are the next big field where Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices are used. You might have seen already terminal stops with an overhead "pantograph" connector. Whenever a bus stops over, it connects itself and charges up the battery. The power electronics for charging are either stationary or integrated on-board into the bus. SiC MOSFETs and SiC Schottky diodes by Diotec help in either place to reduce energy losses and improve the performance of the converters. The drive inverter is finally the part that turns the motors and moves the coach forward and in consequence its passengers. Equipping almost 20% of all new #electricbuses in London, the innovative Voith Electrical Drive System (#VEDS) is becoming the driving force behind #decarbonization in London. By 2034, Transport for London (TfL) aims to operate its entire #bus fleet #emission-free. Thanks to the VEDS, 54 bus routes have already been fully converted to #zero-emission buses and a further 14 partially. Not only in London, but also in other cities such as Belfast, Leicester and Liverpool, the VEDS is a decisive factor for clean mobility. Since its launch in 2021, the VEDS has proven itself worldwide. It combines a water-cooled permanent magnet motor with an inverter and control software for maximum efficiency and performance. All components of the system are perfectly matched, from the hardware components such as the electric motor, traction inverter and high-voltage distribution to the software components such as drive control and energy management. Additional auxiliary units are available as an option. The compact design of the VEDS not only increases the range of the buses, but also significantly reduces #energyconsumption. In order to improve #airquality in London, the city center has been declared a low emission zone, which places certain requirements on the vehicles. The aim is to improve the quality of life and make mobility more #sustainable by promoting #publictransport.
