🤓 Exploring the Power of REST-Based Architecture in Web Services In the digital age, understanding the architectural frameworks that underpin our web and mobile applications is crucial for developers, IT professionals, and businesses aiming to scale efficiently and maintain robust systems. 💻 When you hear the term "REST-based" in the context of computing and web services, it refers to REST (Representational State Transfer), which is an architectural style for designing networked applications. REST is a popular way to build web services because it uses a stateless, client-server, cacheable communications protocol — the HTTP protocol which is the foundation of the web. Here’s a brief overview of what makes a service REST-based: 1. Client-Server Architecture: The client (which could be a website or a mobile app) sends requests to the server which hosts the application. This separation allows each part to evolve independently. 2. Statelessness: Each request from a client to a server must contain all the information the server needs to understand and process the request. The server does not store any state about the client session on the server between requests (although sessions can still be maintained on the client side). 3. Cacheable: Clients can cache responses. Responses must, therefore, implicitly or explicitly label themselves as cacheable or non-cacheable, to prevent clients from getting stale or inappropriate data in response to further requests. 4. Uniform Interface: REST uses a standardized interface (like HTTP GET, POST, PUT, DELETE methods) to manage the state of a resource on a server, which simplifies and decouples the architecture, allowing each part to evolve independently. 5. Layered System: REST allows for a layered system architecture where client cannot ordinarily tell whether it is connected directly to the end server, or to an intermediary along the way. This enables the network to scale and simplifies components. 6. Code on Demand (optional): Servers can temporarily extend or customize the functionality of a client by the transfer of executable code (for example, JavaScript within an HTML page). 🙌 REST is widely used for building APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that web and mobile apps can use to communicate with server-side applications. How can you build a web application in 1 week? Here are a few things that help: - Don't overthink the architecture. Simple. Fast. Reliable. You probably don't need fancy (and complicated) cloud functions, microservices, single-page applications etc. - Work as a pair. The client and developer should be on a call or sat next to each other for at least half the time. This saves countless hours of specification gathering, feature ambiguity and messaging back and forth - Use the 80/20 rule. 80% of the value, will come from 20% of the features. Let's focus on that 20%. The other 80% can be done another day or just left out - Know your tools, inside and out. This allows you to code quickly. - Aim for good. Not perfect. Perfection costs a fortune. Good is cheap. - Build for now. Not tomorrow. What if we have 1000 customers.... how will we handle X, Y, Z? This is a question to ignore until you have your first 10. Any more you'd add?
