At COP26 in Glasgow, 25 public and philanthropic donors committed $1.7 billion through the Forest Tenure Pledge to advance Indigenous Peoples,' and local communities' rights to forest tenure and guardianship. Now, with the release of the 2023-2024 Forest Tenure Funders Group report, real progress is happening. $1.34 billion is disbursed, reaching 79% of the pledge. This funding supports the vital role forest guardians play in climate action, biodiversity protection, and forest preservation. 🌱
Key developments: 🇧🇷 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗹 recognized 10 new Indigenous Territories since 2023. 🇵🇪 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘂 titled 1.9 million hectares for Indigenous Peoples, including those in voluntary isolation. 🌍 𝗗𝗥𝗖, 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗮, and 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 have advanced landmark legal frameworks to secure Indigenous Peoples’ land rights and support their management of forests.
These initiatives are already generating significant environmental impact, thanks to strong advocacy from Indigenous and local organizations and support from governments in tropical forest countries.
Yet, challenges persist. In 2023, 196 environmental human rights defenders—many of them Indigenous Peoples—lost their lives. Securing tenure rights is crucial to reversing this alarming trend. So is ensuring that funding flows directly to these communities. While intermediaries often serve a valuable role, we’re also seeing a push for increased direct funding. In 2023, nearly 11% of Forest Tenure Pledge funds went directly to Indigenous Peoples and local communities—a significant improvement. Still, there’s more to be done, especially to support women and youth within these communities.
Looking ahead, the Forest Tenure Funders Group is supportive of a funding system that reaches forest guardians effectively.
The Forest Tenure Funders Group is building a funding system that honors the rights and knowledge of Indigenous Peoples, strengthens their role in combating climate change, and protects the world’s forests for future generations. 🌎
