The Association of Outsourcing Professionals of Nigeria 2024 Interface & 10th Investiture/Induction Conference was a huge success with stakeholders seeking how to harness the huge potential of the Informal Sector to revolutionize the outsourcing industry and propel the economy to new heights. Speaking on the theme, “Unlocking the Informal Sector for Sustainable Outsourcing Growth” Dr. Chris Itsede. PhD. FIMC. FNIM. Chairman, Polar-Afrique Consulting highlighted how the Investiture conference presents an opportunity to share informed perspectives on the immense potential of Nigeria’s formidable informal sector to leverage its enormous capacity to drive sustainable growth of outsourcing business in Nigeria. Dr. Chris said that the informal sector, which is a vibrant and core part of our economy, is often misunderstood and overlooked despite being a treasure trove of untapped talent and skills. It is not for nothing that development economists consider it a cornerstone of the Nigerian economy. Indeed, Nigeria has the largest informal sector in Africa. The sector contributed about 60% to Nigeria’s GDP of $362.8 billion in 2023. For comparison, last year, Nigeria’s informal sector surpassed the combined GDP of Ghana, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The sector provides livelihoods for millions, employing about 80% of the workforce. Consisting mostly of unregistered and unregulated small-scale farmers, traders, artisans, and service providers, Nigeria’s informal sector plays a pivotal role in poverty alleviation and economic resilience. This was an instructive session widely attended by outsourcing professionals spanning different industries such as Technology, Logistics, Human Resources, Legal as well as key Government parastatals driving the economic revolution for improved employment NSITF - Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, export promotion of goods and services Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and digital innovation for increased competitiveness and economic viability of its nationals NITDA Nigeria. The event concluded with a unified position that in order to harness the vast opportunities of the informal sector, and indeed funnel equipped resources into the formal sector, a guided apprentice model similar to what the formal sector and professional industries do in terms of tutelage, mentorship and the ever-important technical apprenticeship to ensure standards are learnt, transferred and maintained. The AOPN whose mission in part is to strive for outsourcing standards, visibility and advocacy across the outsourcing ecosystem is charged to move this forward earnestly and unlock the potentials herein towards propelling the economy to new heights.
