----- Reviving the Silk Road: Kazakhstan’s Role in International Trade and Its Energy Corridors" Few realize how important our land was for centuries in the culture exchange that was the ancient Silk Road. With trade caravans traveling from the Chinese border across some of our cities, then onward to Central Asia, Persia, the Caucasus, and Europe, the land of the Kazakhs was a true protagonist. For centuries, the Great Kazakh steppe welcomed caravans, and traders speaking different languages filled the bazaars and rested in the oases of route between Asia and Europe. Thos routes are now packed with trains and with XXIth Century infrastructure that is changing everything. Cities, like Sayram, Yassy, Otyrar, and Taraz, dating back thousands of years and once important stops on the Silk Road, are still thriving today. The Silk Road is not a historical concept anymore. The New Silk Road, or Eurasian Land Bridge, is a modern transport system designed to follow the historic Silk Road routes, and expedite the overland movement of cargo and passengers from China to Europe. Kazakhstan, thanks to its geographical location in Central Asia, is a key player in the new Silk Road in the digital world. Today, Kazakhstan continues its role as a connector between East and West through modern energy corridors and trade routes, with its railway and pipeline infrastructure. Initiatives such as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, or the China-Kazakhstan pipeline that created a win-win situation by connecting our vast oil resources directly to China's strong consumer market. Another one, the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) that exports Kazakhstan's oil, providing access to international markets and enhancing energy security. Our participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) aims to revive the Silk Road’s spirit of trade and connectivity. Time and again, I see immense opportunities in benefiting from our historical position along the Silk Road to attract foreign investment. I encourage modernization and we are actively undertaking large-scale digitization reforms in recent years to develop digital infrastructure to support these goals. With this pace, expect to see Kazakhstan taking a more significant role on the world stage soon. We have rich resources that the world requires, strong diplomatic skills and innovative projects for development to strengthen our status as a strategic partner in global trade, more specifically, in international energy and economic networks.

Brazil, under President Lula da Silva, has opted not to join China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), becoming the second Brics nation after India to refuse participation. Instead, Brazil aims for alternative partnerships with Chinese investors while seeking synergy with the BRI framework without formal engagement. Presidential adviser Celso Amorim stated the country will not sign any treaty or perceive Chinese infrastructure projects as an "insurance policy." This decision underscores Brazil's strategic priorities and diverges from China's expectations, as Beijing hoped to showcase Brazil's involvement during President Xi Jinping's state visit on November 20. Officials from Brazil's economy and foreign affairs ministries voiced concerns about the initiative, believing it could lack immediate benefits and potentially strain relations with future U.S. administrations. Despite Amorim and Chief of Staff Rui Costa's trip to Beijing to explore the BRI, they returned "unconvinced and unimpressed" with the proposals. “Viktor Orbán has turned Hungary into the main home for Chinese capital in Europe, capturing more than a quarter of all Chinese investment coming into the continent over the past two years. The outsized share, including a wave of investment into EV factories, has been a fillip to an otherwise struggling Hungarian economy hit by the EU withholding about €20bn of funding over rule of law concerns. Orbán’s challenge now is pulling off the diplomatic gymnastics required to simultaneously remain an ally to Xi Jinping and Donald Trump’s incoming administration of China hawks, while managing the threat of a chronic decline in EU funds. Even against the backdrop of his rule of law dispute with Brussels, Orbán has exacerbated tensions with other EU capitals by maintaining strong diplomatic ties with both Beijing and Moscow. China’s most important EV and battery groups were among those scouring the EU for local manufacturing sites, even before Brussels put new tariffs on Chinese exports.” “BYD last year chose the southern Hungarian city of Szeged as the location for its first large factory in Europe. CATL is building a €7.3bn plant in the east of the country. China upgraded Hungary to one of its closest international partners in May, with Xi pledging to invest in key infrastructure projects during a visit to Budapest. China's Strategic Investment Push in Kyrgyzstan China is making significant moves to transform Kyrgyzstan into a major Eurasian trade hub, despite the country's challenging geography and previous setbacks. The centerpiece of this initiative includes two major projects: a $4 billion Manas Trade and Logistics City near Bishkek and the long-anticipated China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway. The Manas Trade and Logistics City, being built by Hunan Construction Investment Group, will span 700 hectares and include facilities for storage, logistics, and trade. The project's first phase alone costs $700 million, with the Kyrgyz government holding a 49% stake and the Kyrgyz-Chinese Investment Holding controlling the remainder. The railway project, estimated to cost between $5-8 billion, aims to create a new trade route that would bypass both Russia and Kazakhstan, potentially reducing delivery times between China and Europe by up to one week. This southern route would connect through Turkmenistan and Iran to reach Middle Eastern and European markets via Turkey. China's renewed interest in Kyrgyzstan is partly driven by the changing geopolitical landscape following the Ukraine war, which has made traditional Russian routes less attractive for shipping. Moscow's diminished ability to resist Chinese initiatives in Central Asia, due to its dependence on Chinese support, has given Beijing greater freedom to reshape regional trade flows. Beyond these major infrastructure projects, China is also investing in smaller initiatives, including residential complexes and industrial parks. The collaboration between Naryn Special Economic Zone and China's Kashgar SEZ demonstrates Beijing's comprehensive approach to developing economic ties with Kyrgyzstan.
