Story time! I got a message on Monday, followed by a call + voicemail. Someone out there needed STARC Systems Inc. walls ASAP. We connected, ran through the options, and had a solution figured out in under 100 minutes. I brought in a rental partner we have in the area and walls were on site for this customer request the same day! Why do I share this story? Three reasons: 1. Being visible and active on LinkedIn is what led to this sale. My number is available on here and I am always talking about our products. 2. STARC is extremely nimble and we can make those seemingly impossible situations happen thanks to our many partners nationwide. 3. This was NOT our traditional customer - in fact it’s an industry that we have not aggressively prospected. You never know who’s seeing your product and thinking of a use for it. What do you do when Devin Reed asks you to come on Reed Between The Lines in your hometown? You tell him, "Duh, of course," then bail on him because it conflicts with an in-person board meeting you're presenting at for the first time in your career. Ok, maybe just me? Devin invited me to record a second time in Brooklyn last April. And I couldn't be more pumped with how it all shook out. This interview is one of my all-time favorite personal/career moments. We had a real, no-filter convo about things I hadn't talked about before. Like: - Growing up in a now fourth-generation family woodworking business and how this shaped me as a human - Detaching my headspace and self-worth from achieving specific work outcomes and learning how to focus on what I can control - Evaluating my different career options last spring and the lightbulb moments that made me realize it was time to bet on myself All of the personal, work, and life experiences we talked about have made me who I am today. We've arrived at the final month of 2024. Crazy to think about, honestly. It seems as though we were just shouting Happy New Year! But in this short year we've accomplished so much. Multiple projects in states spanning the Southeast. Contracts completed and contracts begun that we won't complete for months, even years from now. Personal team developments and milestones met that have strengthened our foundation. It's been a great year. My final breakfast in a location is my first chance to reflect on the past week of meetings. Reflect on what exactly? - People I’ve met, of course - Surprises I’ve stumbled across, both pleasant and disappointing - The challenge I’m trying to address - Lessons learned about the overall market and talent pool - My process and areas for improvement For me, this step really helps crystalise the core of my black and white commentary. It helps refine my way of working and identify areas for improvement.
