Emergency rescue isn't always straight forward, but if your RAMS are written correctly they'll identify issues and ways of dealing with it, but this may require specialised equipment, so your training provider needs access to this. This is delivering entry and rescue from a side entry vessel using an anchorage point, pole hoist and access slide to ensure no cutting of recovery wire or rope. These types of entry or rescue are not simple and usually require and in depth understanding of what is available within our industry and how it's used correctly. You may require primary and secondary systems to be able to be used if there is no fixed access ladder or temporary one used. Equipment selection and team members are safety critical as size and space may eliminate many devices you have previously used. Don't succumb to professional bias and just use what your used to as that may increase the risk, selection should always be based on what's fit for purpose. Good training providers will know what's available, correct set up and limitations. Alhamdullilah completed an amazing confined space training session at Shorcontrol Safety Ltd. Thank you Stephen for being an amazing instructor. The course allowed me to learn and refresh the following aspects. 1) Concept of Confined spaces and associated potential hazards. 2) PTW, Risk Assessments and SSOW for Confined spaces 3) Analysis of gases in Confined spaces and online monitoring. 4) Use of RPEs such as SCBA 5) Use of rescue equipment such as tripod, winch, safety harness, working BA etc. The best part was the practical demonstration of Confined space incident where we had to go inside a container, complete the job and evacuate in emergency. #EHS, #Safety #Confined_Space #Safety_Protoocols #Emergency_Response #risk_assessment

We have a wide range of manufacturers products available, quite deliberately so, that way we can match the correct equipment to your specific requirements. Understanding exactly how these products work is key to everything as some may seem similar but have certain aspects of operation, build quality or SWL that wouldn't make them the best choice. Our training on the Lift RES-Q was to compare it to the RS550 they both look very similar, so a full understanding allows us to select correctly which is best suited for specific applications. I managed to get into work yesterday afternoon so did some more training with Mark with him using a Lift RES Q, these in house training events are hugely important, we use the equipment and can see the pitfalls. In this case it highlights that we should always use our beam clamp or have another anchor point fitted to the I beam itself if we use the structure only. Usually we are attaching to a davit but our 20 ton welded shackle is great for testing our load arresters but too thick for a normal karabiner to attach and 2 connectors should never be used together, even though when used in direct tension shouldn't pose the same risks as fall arrest. But this shows how easy up and down access can be achieved, especially if you use a power drill. This unit can be used for rescue of a suspended casualty or if the unit itself is anchored to the beam it becomes an auto descender. That makes it ideal for emergency evacuation, but if it's going to be used like this it is critical that the rope length is specific for the task, your RAMS or supplier should have determined this prior to ordering. Today, I would like to share with you the most important elements of this procedure that can save lives in case of emergency evacuation. 🌊🆘 1️⃣ Swift reaction: Ship abandonment alarm requires immediate response from everyone on board. It is important to understand that time is crucial and every second counts. 2️⃣ Familiarity with procedures: Every crew member should be familiar with and trained in ship abandonment procedures. Knowledge about the location and operation of lifeboats and other evacuation measures is extremely important. 3️⃣ Life jackets: They are essential during ship abandonment. Every person on board should have access to a life jacket and know how to properly put it on. 4️⃣ Flares and signals: In case of nighttime or challenging weather evacuation, flares and signals are invaluable tools that help locate and identify people in the water. 5️⃣ Consistency and coordination: In case of ship abandonment alarm, it is important to maintain consistency and coordination in actions. ⭐ For this week’s #SercoStories we spoke to Neil Deane - 'Deano' - to find out what life is like as Deputy Marine Superintendent at Devonport for Serco UK Maritime Services. ⭐ 🚢 After 17 years at sea with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Deano joined Serco in 2017 to work in maritime services, working in a number of roles, including Fuel Supervisor and Boatmaster before becoming Deputy Marine Superintendent in January 2021. In March 2020, Deano also worked as part of the management team in a Serco-run Covid-19 testing centre which he describes as a ‘huge challenge.’ 💬 “There’s no such thing as a typical day at Devonport as no two days are the same. My job is about 40% office based so the majority of the time I’m out and about going to the 37 vessels and barges we manage and doing inspections, checking SOLAS equipment and life-saving appliances, medical kits, plus things like the ropes, rigging and shackles, as well as carrying out planned maintenance tasks on equipment. 💬 “I generally start at 6.30am, going through my emails and then proceeding to work through advance bookings on my calendar and daily tasks.   💬 “These bookings can include rescue boat services, pyrotechnic exchanges, and vessel compass swings. But if a major incident happens, like a sinking vessel or an oil pollution spill then we have to drop everything. There are three on scene commanders, including me, and between us we’re on call 24/7, with each person doing one week on, two weeks off throughout the year.   💬 “In 2023 we had 35 oil pollution incidents to deal with. These can vary in time from one hour, to days, or running into weeks, or it can be an ongoing incident where you have to come back on consecutive days. 💬 “If an oil spill incident occurs, as on scene commander, my number one priority will always be containment, to prevent the incident escalating which would result in a much higher impact on the environment. 💬 “To ensure the high readiness of the response team, I hold several training workshops throughout the year to maintain a level of understanding and proficiency of all the equipment and retain the high standards and quick response times we have demonstrated on numerous occasions. 💬 “Tabletop and practical exercises are also a requirement, with at least one Tier 2 oil response exercise per year. 💬 “My job has many different layers, and the level of responsibility varies. I have always liked a challenge and I certainly get that from my role. I love how no two days are the same, I like working at hi-tempo, and within the marine industry, things happen without notice and I need to react quickly if it involves me which is very similar to my previous career at sea working for the government. I like being able to draw from the years of experience I have working at sea to help others, and I equally enjoy working alongside my colleagues here at HMNB Devonport to form part of the hard-working team we have.” #SercoUK #Maritime #ImpactABetterFuture #MarineServices

Prevention is better than cure. A phrase that rings true when discussing the fire risk that the growing presence of lithium-ion batteries on board ships, poses to the maritime industry. In a recent interview with SAFETY4SEA, Petar Modev, our Head of Ship Inspection provided detailed analysis on the topic of lithium-ion battery fires and calls for cross-industry collaboration if we are to effectively mitigate against the significant risk they present. Whilst prevention is the gold standard, crew must also know how to deal with such fires if they do arise. Petar explains the best firefighting strategies and highlights the importance of advanced training programmes, which turns theory into practical action and better equips seafarers to manage live incidents onboard.
