The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has announced a record number of bathing waters classified as 'Excellent' for the 2025 season. Of the 89 designated sites in Scotland, 50 (56.18%) achieved this top rating, with an additional 27 rated 'Good'. These improvements reflect over a decade of targeted efforts to enhance water quality and reduce pollution. This progress is credited to collaboration among SEPA, Scottish Water, land managers, and other stakeholders. SEPA’s Principal Scientist, Ruth Stidson, emphasised the importance of these achievements for public health and local economies while recognising the need for continued efforts to maintain these standards. The Scottish Government also highlighted the benefits of sustained investment in environmental initiatives, acknowledging that while great strides have been made, further work is needed to ensure all bathing waters meet the required classifications. At King Size Recycling, we believe that every sustainable action plays a vital role in creating a healthier planet. Just as SEPA's efforts have improved the quality of our natural waters, our commitment to eco-friendly mattress recycling reduces landfill waste and preserves valuable resources, contributing to a greener, more sustainable future. On Thursday our director Gwen Frost appeared before the Senedd Climate Change, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, giving evidence on Resource Futures’ behalf that will feed into delivering #BeyondRecycling, the Welsh Government’s #circulareconomy strategy. 🐉 Wales’ progress on household recycling is commendable and the country has gone further than the rest of the UK to improve its waste data. Our key message was that, rather than focusing on increasingly marginal gains in household recycling, the greatest environmental and societal benefits are to be gained by: 🛠 Looking further up the waste hierarchy, providing greater support for circular businesses, #repair and #reuse, and; 🏢 Going beyond a focus on municipal waste and individual behaviours and looking to tackle the sectors, materials and institutions with the greatest potential for #environmental benefits. By moving beyond #recycling, we can empower businesses to make more sustainable and resource-efficient choices – and Wales can reap economic, social and economic benefits. With policy in this area progressing faster in the EU than in the UK since Brexit, it is also a great opportunity for Wales to show what is possible with the circular economy and have an impact beyond its borders.

♻️CIWM Issues Resources Policy Blueprint♻️ Ahead of this summer’s general election, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) has reviewed Defra’s ‘Resources and Waste Strategy for England’ to determine its ongoing relevance, and to identify any policy gaps where it fails to support the UK’s future requirements. Commenting on the publication, CIWM’s Director of Innovation and Technical Services, Lee Marshall , said: “A new Government presents a great opportunity to make the UK more resource resilient. These policy proposals are a clear demonstration of CIWM’s commitment to leading the way and helping to deliver a major step change in our journey to a world beyond waste." #futurewaste #futurewastemagazine #wastemanagment #environment #wastestrategy #peopleinwaste #sustainable #sustainability #recycle #recycling #innovation #technicalservices

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water today concluded its inquiry into #PlasticPollution in Australia’s oceans and waterways, tabling 22 recommendations in its final report. The inquiry investigated the threat posed by plastic pollution to Australia’s oceans and waterways, and examined Australia’s current approach, revealing areas of inadequate policy and management. “One of the major findings is that Australia’s current National Plastics Plan is a disjointed compilation of goals, disappointingly some of which were already completed prior to the plan being developed and others that were not completed by their expected deadline,” the chair’s foreword of the report read. BRANCHING OUT: Did you know that we have partnered with environmental organisation Forest Carbon since 2020 and havw so far ‘captured’ a total of 439.1 tonnes of CO2, helping to plant approximately 1,756 trees? Carbon emissions produced by our waste collecting vehicles and employees’ journeys to and from work are off-set through the UK woodland carbon capture scheme. With four trees planted for every tonne of carbon emitted, our contribution from 108 tonnes of carbon footprint equates to approximately 432 trees planted every year. The project helps create new woodlands that benefit the country, the landscape and the global environment. We are supporting initiatives in Yorkshire, Northumberland, the Scottish Borders and Highlands, as well as internationally in Uruguay, Peru and Guatemala. Pauline Griggs, our Compliance Officer and ‘environmental ambassador’, said: “We care greatly about our environment and our actions as a business are formulated with that thought in mind. “We are particularly proud about our achievement in helping to plant a hectare of trees and, while continue to strive to reduce our overall emissions, we remain committed to supporting the work of Forest Carbon.” 🌲 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dKfKJmJd #trees #planting #carbonemissions #forest #woodland #global #initiatives #carbonfootprint

The challenges we face, whether it’s climate change, protecting Country, waste management, or moving to a circular economy, are significant. Last week, our CEO Tony Chappel and Aboriginal Initiatives Lead Kylie Jacky spoke at the Australian Environmental Law Enforcement and Regulators Network Global Summit (AELERT Leadership Team) about challenges and opportunities. Kylie shared our journey to ensure Aboriginal voices are the first voices for Country in our work. This ongoing commitment reflects our dedication to cultural inclusion, respect, and a holistic approach to environmental stewardship. While Tony emphasised that shifting to a circular economy not only helps reduce waste but also drives decarbonisation, supports economic growth, and lowers our environmental footprint. In 2022-23 alone, second-hand shopping in NSW saved the community an estimated $432 million and diverted nearly 50,000 tonnes of waste from landfill—equivalent to removing 29 mid-size SUVs' worth of waste! #ProtectingTomorrowTogether #2024GlobalSummit

💧 Where do we stand worldwide with SDG Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation? According to current figures: - 2.2 Billion people do not have access to clean drinking water. - 700 Million people could be forced to leave their homes by 2030 due to water shortages. - 1 of 3 people worldwide do not have the opportunity to wash their hands at home. Dr. Friedrich Hetzel, Head of department Water and Waste Management of German Association of water, waste water and waste (DWA) says: "From the DWA’s current perspective, achieving SDG 6 by 2030 is not possible. Unfortunately, the challenges associated with climate change, the prevailing political conflicts and other crises such as the pandemic are causing developments towards this goal to stall or even decline. That is why the DWA in Germany and worldwide is committed to putting the achievement of the SDG goals back at the top of the political agenda and supports partners all over the world through international projects." 🧾 Read our Two-Pager to get a deeper insight on SDG 6. #inglosus #foundation #institute #sustainabledevelopment #sustainablefashion #sustainableliving #sustainablefood #sustainablestyle #manufacturing #greenfinance #climateaction #climatechange #impact #futuregeneration #cooperation

This #WorldSoilDay Let’s recognize the critical importance of soil and commit to practices that sustain its vitality for future generations. At AESL we are committed to protect and enhance the soil by the measures that are aligned with the UNSDGs 15 (Life of Land) by diverting over 99% waste from landfills to reduce soil contamination, advocating for recycling to minimize soil erosion and preventing soil pollution by reducing landfill waste. Additionally, our continuous effort supports UNSDGs 2 (Zero Hunger) by promoting composting to enrich soil health. By conserving natural resources through recycling, we are aligned with UNSDGs 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and our Zero Waste to Landfill certification endorses our sustainable practices in line with UNSDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
