There is no rule that says in order to be a good funeral director, you have to be available to anyone at all times for any reason. In order to give grieving families the care and attention they require, you must be willing to establish boundaries and carve out time for yourself. Everybody deserves to be welcomed and included in planning and/or attending the funeral of a loved one - as saying goodbye is just as important as saying hello. At this difficult time, it can be especially challenging for individuals and families with additional support needs. If we respectfully ask people what they need and make space for their involvement, this can help alleviate some of sense of loss of control that is felt when grieving. Top tips include: 🤗 How will they care for you and your person? 💡 Do they offer you genuine choices? 📢 Do they come recommended? 💷 Are their costs transparent or are you pressured to spend more? 🗺 Where are they (but you don't have to stay local)? 🛌 Can you visit your person if you wish? What will the experience be like? 🕰 Are they available for the time you want? 🤔 Follow your gut! You can change your mind! Please spread the word. Too many people think a funeral director is someone you end up with rather than someone you can choose consciously because they work for you.
