Just in: MSF Endorses UP Medical Device Manufacturer Expansion -- let's go! #medicaldevice #medtech #entrepreneurs The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) board on Monday supported a nearly $500,000 grant for the business expansion of a medical device manufacturer in Marquette. Able Medical Devices is expected to construct a 30,000 square foot manufacturing facility that could create 40 new jobs. The project is expected to cost nearly $13 million. The MSF was expected to give a $500,000 Michigan Business Development Program grant at their next meeting on Oct. 22. "With our growing suite of economic development tools, we will continue to compete with other states and nations to bring jobs and projects to every part of Michigan. Let's keep getting it done so we can build and lead an advanced manufacturing economy," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Sen. Ed McBroom (R-Waucedah Twp.) and Rep. Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) praised the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) for their support of a company based in the Upper Peninsula. The 40 jobs were expected to have an average wage of $36 per hour, which is higher than the median wage in the region at $20.88 per hour. Matt McCauley, of SVP Regional Development, and Invest UP CEO Marty Fittante said Able Medical Devices' expansion was a result of the hard work of partners across the region and would help lift the economy. "This expansion not only reinforces the reality that the region is well-equipped to serve as a prime location for advanced manufacturing with a strong workforce, a vibrant local economy and a supportive environment, but it also aligns perfectly with our vision for a prosperous and dynamic community," Fittante said. https://hubs.ly/Q02TlcFw0

If I had an FDA cleared medical device ready to be marketed to hospital groups in the US for the first time, here is what I would consider doing to bring on my very first customer... - Identify a major hospital group for collaboration on an initial pilot - Meet with the OBGYN department head of that group (e.g. Chair, Chief, Division Director etc) to introduce the device (assume you gain clinical buy-in) - Discuss parameters of an early pilot (what data needs to be collected by providers to support approval at the system level) - Offer a discount to support the pilot (or devices free of charge). Justified if this is the very first user (early adopter) in the country - Work with procurement/ value analysis to agree a free of charge evaluation (trial period, contract, vendor set-up, protocol, on-going pricing etc) - Obtain a zero charge PO to mark the start of the pilot - Provide initial and on-going on-site education to support the clinical teams using your device - Regularly engage with providers to monitor initial uses and obtain feedback (this might come via a clinical champion) - On completion of the pilot, have your clinical champion collate provider feedback for submission to the new product committee (or a committee of this type) - Assuming the above is a success and their experience is consistent with the benefits you initially articulated, you should have your first customer and orders to follow Ultimately, there will be nuance to the above list, but thinking about this process is a good start. Hospital and system internal approval processes will vary considerably. We know that healthcare systems are slow to adopt new technologies. In the obstetrics space especially. Target early adopters and key opinion leaders. Consider your distribution strategy - how will you move from your first customer to national adoption? If you need help with any of the above or would like to talk through, drop me a message. I spent many years building our US business from scratch and I now share that journey, knowledge, and network with others through OBG Access I'm enjoying working with exciting start ups in the medical device space, especially clinician-inventors, like my father who wanted to solve a clinical problem and will leave a lasting impact on his field. Maybe there's one more adventure left... #FDAClearance #MedicalDevices #Innovation #Obstetrics #Maternity #WomensHealth #Sales #Business #USLaunch

My talented colleague Jim Hammerand sat down with the always-impressive Lisa Earnhardt, EVP and Group President of Medical Devices at Abbott for an action-packed discussion with insights into #medtech innovation and advice for device #engineers. It may be one of my favorite articles to-date! Medical Design & Outsourcing #WomeninMedTech #bestindustryintheworld
Abbott EVP and Medical Devices Group President Lisa Earnhardt is the most powerful woman in medtech — and unlike most other leaders of the world's largest medical devices businesses, she was trained as an engineer. I recently spoke with Earnhardt for Medical Design & Outsourcing about expanding access to medtech, innovations across Abbott's vast portfolio, and advice for device designers, engineers, women in medtech and other industry professionals. “We truly are in a transformational moment in the medtech industry broadly, and at Abbott we are leaders in this transformation, helping people with some of the most chronic, prevalent diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular care, chronic pain, movement disorders, some of the most challenging conditions,” she said. “… Innovation is core to who we are.” Thanks to all the MDO readers who suggested questions for this interview. It's live now at https://lnkd.in/eNQmFrkT and will be on the cover of our upcoming Women In Medtech issue.
