Today marks the 25th anniversary of 3BL’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens ranking. https://lnkd.in/dk48rEB We're excited to recognize and congratulate this year's top 100, with HP landing in the No. 1 spot, followed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Johnson & Johnson, Owens Corning and Ingersoll Rand. First published in a 1999 print edition of Business Ethics magazine, at a time when less than a third of U.S. companies issued annual sustainability reports, 3BL acquired the 100 Best Corporate Citizens in 2017 and has taken up the mantle of preserving this prestigious ranking to meet the ongoing needs and demands of our space. Producing the 100 Best ranking involves analysis of publicly available data from all Russell 1000 companies. There’s no application fee to be considered for the ranking, nor do we charge companies to review the data used to calculate scores.  We partner with ISS-Corporate to do this research. This year, we made some improvements to the methodology to reflect modern best practices for performance and disclosure — including adding more performance-based factors around key issues like greenhouse gas emissions and workforce diversity. 3BL also partners with InfluenceMap to assess the intensity and orientation of a company's lobbying efforts and whether this lobbying is supportive or oppositional to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. A “red flag” penalty is assessed if a company's lobbying is deemed oppositional to Paris-aligned policies, and a “green flag” bonus is awarded to recognize firms using their political influence and spending in support of the agreement. In 2024, VF Corporation Corp. is the only company to receive the “green flag” bonus. Also new for 2024 is an analysis we conducted on the 100 Best Corporate Citizens with our partners at the research technology company Glow. Far away from the early days of the 100 Best, almost all large companies now issue sustainability reports. With this research, we looked to find out more about how robust sustainability reporting and disclosure impacts consumer perception and business growth. We found that the 100 Best Corporate Citizens beat the S&P 500 market average over the past two years, a strong sign that robust disclosures send positive signals to investors that impact stock price. But we also found that disclosure alone is not enough to influence consumer perception: Businesses need to think beyond the report page and communicate regularly to break through to consumers, something we at 3BL already help our clients do.  Congratulations to all the companies who made the list.  I’d also like to thank my 3BL colleague Mary Mazzoni for her hard work on this project. #sustainability #ESG #climate #socialimpact #100bestCC

With Donald Trump’s re-election, the context shifted drastically. But in some ways, maybe not as much as one would think. Climate change efforts will be curtailed. DEI efforts will be made more difficult. And Trump may make good on his threat of mass deportations, which will upend many businesses and supply chains. But, despite all this change, much remains the same: the world will continue to divide, tensions will rise, and business will be expected to play a more significant role in solving some of the world’s most intractable problems.
