Australian private schools are stepping up their defenses as cyberattacks take the lead as their top insurance risk. According to AON Australia's Independent Schools Risk Report, cyber threats, mental health challenges, and social media risks now dominate the landscape. With daily ransomware attempts and the misuse of AI growing, schools are working tirelessly to protect sensitive family data, maintain trust, and adapt to a complex digital world. Safeguarding both online and offline environments has never been more critical. With the recent security breach at the University of Winnipeg; the latest update on the story states that the incident also likely led to a leak of personal information of staff (likely since 2015) and students (likely since 2016). No information has been disclosed on what exactly transpired as investigations are still ongoing. Educational institutions such as universities handle huge amounts of data; so it is no surprise that they will be attractive targets for cyber-criminals. The education sector should remain vigilant to protect themselves, their employees, and students from these threats. https://lnkd.in/gJ5ZgjH3

It was great to launch our latest thought leadership study yesterday. Our survey of over 1,000 65+ year olds revealed some interesting stats 🤳 Use of video calls has overtaken landlines among over 65s 🧑🧑🧒🧒 81% believe technology is important to keep in touch with family 😔 The key barrier to use isn’t a lack of skills or access to technology - its concerns about security of personal information and fears of being scammed 😡 17% have lost money thanks to an online, email or text scam 👀 Only 28% feel very confident they could recognise a scam ✅There’s a real appetite to learn more, with 58% keen to know more about identifying scams, and 66% of those aged over 85 want to improve how they use technology AND stay safe online. Its findings like this that’ve motivated us to look at what we can do here at Benetas. We’re partnering with the Cyber Safety Project team, and co-designing tailored training for older Australians, starting with residents living in our Bridgewater Lake retirement living village. We’re looking forward to rolling out the program and making a genuine difference to older Victorians! More information on our project can be found on our website. #agedcare #agedcareaustralia #seniors

It's always promising to see increased funding directed towards security measures. However, what concerns me is the tendency for districts to seek one solution that promises to magically ensure the safety of all schools. Let me be clear—such a solution DOES NOT exist! Regardless of how you approach it, school security is about creating culture and implementing multiple layers of protection. While weapon detection systems can be valuable tools, they are not flawless. I encourage after you install them to invite security professionals to test their effectiveness. You might be surprised by the results. This isn't to discourage their use, but rather to emphasize that they should not be solely relied upon as a remedy. Instead, the primary focus should be on hiring a dedicated and qualified security director and, actually listening to their expertise. Following this, conducting a thorough assessment of security needs should be the next step. It's time to abandon the search for the pixie dust and instead prioritize practical measures that are proven to work! #schoolsecurity #education #safety #securityculture #zeronow #ncssd #security Jason M. I strongly believe we need stronger social media regulations, but I’m concerned that a complete ban for under-16s is an overreach. 🏫 Child safety issues persist in schools: As a parent, I’ve seen firsthand that challenges kids face today are often complex and not purely social media-based. My son experienced mistreatment that was largely unaddressed by the school. When he finally defended himself, he was suspended, while those responsible stayed to do the same to other students. The NSW Department of Education ultimately relied on bureaucracy to justify their approach, leaving the root issues unresolved. 👮♀ Blanket ‘protecting children’ argument: Often, protecting children is used as a catch-all justification for restrictive policies. While it’s hard to argue against protecting kids, we should be cautious about using this as a reason to limit rights more broadly. 👩⚖️ Corporate accountability: Just as local businesses are held accountable for underage sales, large tech companies should be held to similar standards for keeping their platforms safe. Age verification shouldn’t fall solely on parents and kids - platforms need to be liable too. 🔐 Security concerns: With multiple high-profile data breaches, Australia has seen the vulnerabilities in our systems. We must ensure that whatever age verification systems are implemented don’t introduce new weaknesses. Protecting children must also mean protecting their data and their privacy from being compromised. Social media presents real risks, but I believe effective regulation needs a more balanced approach. How do we strike the right balance? #SocialMediaBan #Australia #ChildSafety #DataPrivacy #CyberSecurity

School scams don't take a gap year after high school. They continue right into college! 🎓 Here are the methods of scam they're using: ⚠️ FINANCIAL AID SCAMS - Scammers may offer fake grants, scholarships, or loan reductions. Review offers closely, do research, and be wary of requests for application fees. ⚠️RENTAL SCAMS - Look out for too good to be true rental properties. Avoid giving payment information for an off-campus spot before seeing it. ⚠️UNIVERSITY EMAIL SCAMS - Scammers mimic school domains, sending fake messages from staff. Watch out for unsolicited job offers or requests for money, signs of scams. Stay vigilant! The primary reason for setting up SYNaaS is NOT to just provide a cost effective and compliant backup solution for UK education but it’s to help save UK education as a whole. We have pledged that next year we want to save UK schools at least 2 million pounds in 2025. Money that can be spent on the very kids we send to school. I have three small children who are in their primary education. I like any other parent would love to see them thrive. I want to use the knowledge and skills i’ve learnt in helping them do so. The last thing I want to see is a school in the UK not comforming to Backups and adequate cyber security due to financial restrictions and then it affecting the future of the students and teachers there. We pledge to save £2m next year and hopefully a whole load more thereafter. Who is onboard? Dm me if you want to get together to be part of some positive changes and projects. We will fund it all. https://lnkd.in/eXGKWaA2

The legal case notwithstanding, I have some practical worries regarding @FCC's proposal for WiFi usage on buses. What is urgently required is for #ERate to be simplified, made accessible to a broader range of technologies, and made more user-friendly for educational institutions. https://buff.ly/3SboVBz #cybersecurity #FCC #ERate #lokx

Cyber attacks against schools. This is serious stuff - whilst there's a lot of dismay and bewilderment in this report, I'm appalled at the lack of basic care on display: care for students, care for safeguarding on all levels, and care for the prolific digital systems they rely on for day-to-day operations. The issue of cyber security, staff training and business planning all seem to be viewed as separate issues to keeping pupils safe from harm, and this baffles me. Because, they are all intrinsically linked. Schools operate under strict legal obligations for pupil safeguarding, and yet the digital systems relied on to help do this appear to miss essential consideration for risk assessing, shoring up, impact assessing, providing training on and securing effectively. Let's be clear - if you're going to implement CCTV systems, digital files to store health, medical and disability information about pupils, store staff personnel and background checks online, keep banking and financial information about employees and families in school payroll and lunch payment systems, and use a multitude of shared school devices to access the internet, then the very least you can do as an organisation is ensure this is all done to the very limits of your security abilities. And then some. Because, allowing these systems to be poorly implemented, distributed with shared and easily cracked passwords, and managed by service providers and third parties without any due diligence is a recipe for disaster. Such failures can lead to information about children ending up on the dark web, identity theft to further people trafficking and financial fraud, and a complete dereliction of the basic tenets of safeguarding law. Huge budgets are not always needed - due diligence checks on service providers is mandatory under the DPA 2018, as is due care and attention of any controller over the data they process and share. There is a lot of free advice available for schools and education providers to avail themselves of. What seems to be lacking is the genuine effort on the part of the educators to educate themselves. #SchoolCyberAttacks #CyberSecurityInEducation #SafeguardingFundamentals #ICO #DfE
