The #Directorate General of #GST Intelligence has issued a ₹120 crore notice to IIT-Delhi for GST on research funding received between 2017 and 2022, prompting criticism from academics and officials who argue that government-funded research should be tax-exempt. A Ministry of Education official called it a "misinterpretation," emphasizing the need to support research rather than tax it. The #FinanceMinistry has been accused of overlooking that much of the funds go toward GST-covered assets and consumables, with experts warning this could raise education costs. Similar notices to other institutions, including a ₹16.77 crore demand to Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Limited and ₹32,403 crore to Infosys, have also drawn legal challenges. While the move aligns with GST regulations, critics argue it risks discouraging research and innovation in Bharat's higher education sector, highlighting the need for clearer policies on taxing government-funded initiatives.
