"De-follilize" is the new buzz word, but what does it really mean? As the energy transition unfolds and industries are electrified, we will see the supply of fossil-based raw material inputs dwindle. However, the world will still need carbon to make chemicals, plastics, and other physical goods. Progress has been slow to date: Companies fear that if they scale renewable routes too early, they will be at a disadvantage, especially if there are no supporting policies in place nor markets developed for more novel products. However, if companies act too late, they could miss out on the growing demand for more sustainable products or an alternative pathway that proves superior. Ultimately, how should companies be thinking about these different pathways to chemicals? If the raw material inputs change, will the product outputs change as well? Our commitment to #netzero starts with ensuring that we capture carbon not just in our materials, but also in our methodologies. Braskem supports a necessary review and change of the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF). Namely, the introduction of the +1/-1 approach to carbon accounting. PEF, amongst many Life Cycle Assessments, were not built with biogenic carbon in mind. The biogenic carbon cycle is a circular carbon cycle that maintains the balance between carbon on earth and carbon in the atmosphere. It is our ability and responsibility to preserve this carbon cycle that will ensure that we reach Net Zero by 2050. In order to do this, we need the +1/-1 approach. So, what is the +1/-1 methodology and why is it so important? 💡 The use of AI and digital tools will have an impact on the waste and energy sector. 👉 The use of cutting-edge technology results in a double environmental positive effect: (i) material is recovered to be sent to recycling preventing the extraction of virgin material/new resources; (ii) some of the material recovered escapes from being landfilled or incinerated and avoiding incineration of waste fractions such as fossil-derived plastics leads to a mitigation of the CO2 emissions from waste-to-energy (WtE) plants while getting closer to limiting this pathway to unrecyclable fractions. 🔎 IEA Bioenergy Task 36 (material and energy valorisation of waste in a circular economy) produced a report to analyse two case studies highlighting the use of new technologies in the waste management industry for increasing material recovery of waste fractions that otherwise might go to energy recovery or be landfilled. The material recovered might has sufficient quality for being recycled contributing to reach the recycling targets.
