https://lnkd.in/e29Jmr5u Maryland: Governor signs bill ousting Hamas-linked CAIR from state hate crimes monitoring board --- "Richly deserved and long overdue. In fact, the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) never should have been on the board in the first place. Also, there should be no such board. A crime is a crime. If you assault someone, you should be prosecuted. If you assault someone while calling him a racial slur, you should be prosecuted. “Hate crime” is a concept that is predicated upon the assumption that there is speech that should be prohibited. This opens the way to larger restrictions on speech, and to tyranny."

I’ve posted on this recently. A couple issues I foresee: 1. Who determines what words and context are hateful? #power #foresight 2. Reading the excerpt below, it’s important to note that in today’s world an allegation is often enough to cast doubt on a person’s character/integrity, or outright ruin their life/career. #cancelculture #abuseofprocess 3. Sub to point 2, sometimes criminal and civil processes aren’t affordable to the general public, even with the hope costs could be recouped, it’s not a guarantee. #middleclass #risk Excerpt- [“Of course, I’m concerned about any chilling [of] freedom of expression. I heard those concerns, to a great extent,” he said. He said the bill includes various safeguards to allow the human-rights commission to throw out frivolous complaints, including a kind of “summary dismissal mechanism” if a complaint does not hit the threshold for hatred or if someone files a complaint in bad faith. Costs could also be issued.] #racism #hate #extremism #hatecrime #hatemotivated #speech #freedomofspeech #charterrights #online #internet #restrictions #doanddonot #childprotection #safeguards #criminal #conditions #restrictions #peacebond

Systematic crimes against humanity: Here is the latest UN report detailing the Mullahs' systematic crimes against humanity: Murder, Torture, Imprisonment, Persecution, Rape, and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence, enforced disappearances, and other inhumane acts. These atrocities are committed as part of a widespread and systematic attack against civilians in Iran, particularly targeting women, girls, and those who dare to support human rights. The GI-TOC, through its South Africa Observatory (SA-Obs), has recorded at least 10 politically-related assassinations between January and April 2024. This contrasts with 31 political assassinations recorded across 2023. Politically-related assassinations, which we define as killings targeted at individuals holding a political or administrative position, whistleblowers, and political activists, have a particularly detrimental impact on governance and democracy. These murders are used to silence political opponents, take control of succession battles, infiltrate local governance and influence political outcomes. https://lnkd.in/dv7YQXmp

Respected Members of Congress, I humbly urge you to keep the spirit of compassion alive within the halls of Congress. It is imperative that you extend your support to your loyal allies who have stood by America in times of need. By supporting these allies, you can help ensure their safety and security in the face of uncertainty. Let us not forget the importance of empathy and solidarity as we consider the welfare of these dedicated allies. It's worth noting that Taliban and other terrorist groups are actively targeting these former prosecutors due to their long-standing enmity towards law, democracy, and human rights. These prosecutors are being pursued for seeking justice and upholding the rule of law, principles that stand in direct opposition to the ideologies of these extremist groups. It's crucial for you to acknowledge this threat and take measures to protect these individuals who have risked their lives in the pursuit of justice and freedom. #AfghanProsecutors #SpeakerJohnson #HouseDemocrats #HouseGOP #SenateGOP #SenateDems #tedcruz #ChuckGrassley #SenSchumer #amyklobuchar #TomCottonAR #ChrisCoons #UUSJ #RepJames #RepAngieCraig #RepDonBacon #RepBlakeMoore #RepJohnCurtis #RepKweisiMfume #ChrisVanHollen #SenatorCardin #RepJasonCrow #MichaelBennet #Hickenlooper #RepMcGovern #RepAuchincloss #RepGolden #LindseyGrahamSC #SenBlumenthal #JerryMoran #SenTomCotton #RepRudyYakym #RepJimBaird #RepBradWenstrup #RepBrianFitz #RepHoulahan #RepSmucker #RepSherrill #RepJerryNadler #RepMikeLawler #RepBrianHiggins #RepSpanberger #RepWexton #RepMariaSalazar #RepJeffJackson #RepNancyMace #RepTimBurchett #RepDavid #RepGregStanton #RepCiscomani #RepJasonCrow https://lnkd.in/eh4Eqj5S

This is a wonderful piece. Well done Usani Odum The case of Rwanda certainly maintains the hope of other African countries, especially the victims of atrocities, that accountability and justice can be achieved. It is a hopeful glimmer in a continent shrouded by the supposed impossibilities of justice and sustainable peace especially when the perpetrators of conflict are in charge of the transitional justice processes meant to usher in peace. During our (YORJA) interactions with youths from conflict areas in our external training series and informal interactive sessions, helplessness and near-hopelessness are features often noticed in them. They are in a struggle between achieving sustainable peace (by ensuring their stories are being captured and considered in the transitional justice process) and silencing the doubts in their heads that their efforts won’t matter, that those responsible won’t face justice and their people won’t find justified peace. It is often a bleak picture but Rwanda stands as our hope of sustainable peace and an efficient TJ process. We hope with the ongoing processes in the Gambia and other African countries, this glimmer of hope will be strengthened and replicated across our continent ✊ #youth4transitionaljustice #criminalaccountability #Yorja
Lessons from the post-genocide Rwandan experiment and guidance from the 2019 AU Transitional Justice Policy show that criminal accountability is still an indispensable part of transitional justice, writes Usani Odum. Though this is a positive step forward for society, the government should also take responsibility for its part in placing women and children in harmful positions. Inadequate access to justice, the deficient regulation of the financial services industry, discriminatory and impractical welfare systems including out-of-reach mental health and other care, not to mention historical disparity in pay and property settlement all of which the government did not and has not compensated or remedied. While it is well and good to implement initiatives and have goals moving forward, without restoration of people's lives it will continue to be a catch-up game. The effects of coercive control will continue to exist and perpetrators of abuse, including the government, will persist, until government acknowledges and remedies its indiscretions/wrongdoings and harm. #justice #advocacy #womenandchildren #government #deficiencies #remedy #coercivecontrol #humanrights #welfare #education #abuse #familyviolence #domesticviolence #fsi #healthcare
White Ribbon Australia and Communicare welcome the news that coercive control will become a criminal offence in Queensland, an effort driven by the tragic deaths of Hannah Clarke and her children. Our thoughts are with Sue and Lloyd Clarke for their strength and determination in bringing Hannah's Law to fruition. It is crucial to understand that domestic violence and abuse extends far beyond physical harm; we recognise that coercive control often acts as a strong precursor to physical assault, and is associated with 99% of cases where a woman is killed by her partner or ex-partner. The growing recognition of coercive control sheds light on behaviours that were previously concealed behind closed doors and strengthens our ability to hold all individuals accountable for their use of violence and abuse. Australians are demanding accountability for perpetrators of coercive control, with a clear desire to prevent more women from enduring such abuse in the future. #HannahsLaw #CoerciveControl #FamilyDomesticViolence

Sexual violence = Torture. At a time in history where sexual torture is used to cleanse and uproot generations of women, girls, men, boys and LGBTQ+ people. While sexual torture tolerance and a willingness to justify torture is at all times specially during conflicts and war. The #GeneralAssembly has a responsibility to ensure sexual torture survivors have their day in court and thae strongest international legal framework is the convention against torture. This report outlines the key elements of the Special Repporteur on Torture Call to Action on States to recognize sexual violence as torture.
#UNGA79 United Nations #UNNews covered my report to the #GeneralAssembly on #sexualtorture in war with this extensive interview that includes key elements of my Call to Action on States to recognize that sexual violence in armed conflict is #torture. The torture legal framework is robust, inclusive and provides opportunity for shame to shift from survivors to perpetrators. This interview also notes some of the broader trends and developments in torture globally — as we approach the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention Against Torture. Support needs to follow those affected into Family Court matters where they can access Special Victims Support resources in WA right now for Domestic Violence matters, not just Criminal Court. For those attending court who have Disabilties, there is a systematic lack of awareness and support for these women in the justice system and advocacy space also in WA. Do better to make changes for positive outcomes 👣 #domesticviolence #coercivecontrol #justice #disabilityawareness #women
