🎉 We are excited to celebrate a huge first step for representing Chiquitania on Wikimedia Commons! Indigenous youth from the group JUMA (Chiquitanian Youth United for the Environment) have added stunning photos of their beautiful region to Wikimedia Commons. Capturing the landscapes, festivals, and culture of Lomerío and Concepción in eastern Bolivia, these images showcase the rich life of the Chiquitanian Indigenous people through the eyes of the youth. This project, organized by Wikimedistas de Bolivia, is just the beginning of a broader effort to share information about this region. Chiquitania is a region of tropical savannas in the Santa Cruz Department in eastern Bolivia. The Chiquitano ethnicity emerged in the context of nearly 200 years of resistance to colonization, among socially and linguistically diverse Indigenous populations required to speak a common language by the colonial-era Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos. A recent trip to the Couvert des Jacobins in Toulouse (and their exhibition on the Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade) reawoke the medieval historian in me. (And the rest of Toulouse and Aquitaine awoke the gastronomer in me!) The exhibition focuses on an obscure so-called heretical sect, the Cathars, who were pursued with avengeance by the Church and French crown in the 1200s. For 150 years it has been received wisdom that the Cathars believed in a duallist world, that they had a whole alternative ecclesiastical structure, and that whole communities in Languedoc were fully committed to heresy. Recently, this has been successfully challenged by revisionist historians. Why is this relevant to LinkedIn? Because the 150 years of received opinion proved to be a castle built on sand: there is no direct evidence that these people believed in what they were accused of. I guess the lesson in this is to always challenge assumptions and go to the primary sources/data! Oh, and that holidays in the south of France awesome.
