“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales”. - Albert Einstein.
I think that man knows a thing or two about intelligence.
A child’s imagination is quite something to behold & very powerful. Fairy Tales tap into the core of imagination, with fantasy worlds & characters that don’t ordinarily fit into reality. But Fairy Tales not only boost & stimulate imagination, they also contain valuable messages that can help shape behavior & basic morality. They pack a powerful punch, taking on the tough life lessons & pitfalls & teaching valuable lessons that leave a lasting impression on us well beyond our childhood years.
Morality
Deeply embedded in Fairy Tales is a moral compass. The backbone of all these narratives is the lessons of good vs evil, right vs wrong & love vs loss. Even better, is that they are very black-&-white. There are no grey areas & messages are simple & clear. You don’t have to guess who is the villain or which behavior is wrong.
Warnings
We know that life isn’t always easy & things often go wrong, & Fairy Tales aren’t afraid to bring that to the forefront. There are consequences to decisions & we learn that the outcome depends on the choices we make. It isn’t always happily ever after – the world can be tough & unfair, that other people won’t always be kind or truthful & life itself can feel wicked. Pinocchio warns us that others can see our lies & that hanging with the wrong crowd will lead us down dark paths, Little Red Riding Hood reminds us of the dangers of talking to strangers.
Hope
Fairy Tales showcase the natural violence, oppression, & challenges that occur in the world & at the same time preserve the one piece of humanity that sets us apart & helps us to prosper: hope.
I will never forget that I can overcome the odds & triumph –as long as I stick to the right path in the direction that my moral compass points out – my happily-ever-after is just around over the river & through the woods, follow the trail of fairytale books, then head to the gingerbread house under the tower of the castle.
