This news from Arianee represents a turning point in how we approach retail. Not just B2C - also B2B. Customers want more information and they want to access it on their terms. And ultimately, what the customer wants, the customer gets...
Hence even retail's most established companies (read Marks and Spencer) are adopting DPPs. But as much as this is a customer-facing information point, it's fed by everything that comes before it B2B side.
Arianee's push into making DPPs easy via Shopify is important. Shopify hosts more than 4.75 million stores globally. In 2023 it facilitated transactions from 675 million buyers. That's a lot of people.
Given the relative influence that M&S and Shopify have via their access to national and international customers, we can confidently expect that DPPs will quickly move from being a sometime-offered novelty to being a baseline customer expectation.
As mentioned above, DPPs are informed by all of the B2B processes that exist in bringing products to life. Depending on what's included, they might require information about raw materials and suppliers, manufacturers and processes, transport miles, and much more.
Whether it's clothing, accessories, footwear, beauty, or luxury, premium or general... this is already happening. But I'll bet that most businesses wouldn't be able to quickly, efficiently and securely share this information.
It doesn't matter whether you're the one creating the DPP or not. It doesn't matter whether you're completely behind the scenes and do zilch customer-facing.
What matters is that you're able to do your bit to give the end-user what they want. And they want transparency.
Be under no illusion, DPPs are coming. You need to work out what will be required from your business, and how you're going to work with partners to share information. Then you need to build and run the processes needed to make it happen.
