My book, Modern Motherhood: An American History (Rutgers University Press) is 10 years old this coming month! (And so is the article below, with a younger version of me.) For this Mother's Day, if you have a mother who likes to think about history--and motherhood--it is still available to purchase, and I'm told, will be in print for the foreseeable future. What a decade since publication! No one could have foreseen how much the global pandemic and other cataclysmic developments would shift and accelerate various trends in mothers' lives. Still so much to explore and unpack in the lives of mothers, and the ways we could create a society that better supports their critical work.

Children's Rights in Planning and Placemaking! Our new Improvement Service paper 'How to children's rights fall into place?' takes a children’s rights approach to place and placemaking and considers how children’s rights can be realised through placed-based approaches. It pulls together a range of key policy areas which are important to placemaking and identifies how place makers can actively consider children’s rights in their work and approach to work. The Just Cause of The Momentum Center for Social Engagement is to create a community where every person is fully visible, valued, and connected. Executive Director Barbara Lee VanHorssen provides a positive space for social and recreational activities related to mental health, wellbeing, and disability. Membership costs $1 per year and no diagnosis or referral is required. They fill the gap in the community of care between individual and clinical services. The most important thing about The Momentum Center is it works! Members are showing statistically significant decreases in depression, anxiety, and loneliness. The Momentum Center is giving people hope, meaning, and purpose. They are literally saving lives. There are locations in both Grand Haven and Holland. If you haven't been to their location at 401 N 7th Street, I encourage you to check it out. It is a fabulous new space! According to Weaver Elizabeth and Kiana Jackson for STAT, "representation of disabled principal investigators in academia has declined, dropping from 2% to 1.3% between 2008 and 2022, even though disabled workers’ overall labor force participation rate increased during that period. The unemployment rate in 2019 among scientists and engineers with a disability (5.27%) was higher than the national unemployment rate (3.7%). The disabled scientists who WERE employed received fewer training and funding opportunities like grants, assistantships, fellowships, or scholarships, than did those without disabilities". The problem is especially acute in the Southern US, where poverty and other types of discrimination intersect, and legislation is being passed against DEI programs and other approaches to inclusion. "Nonetheless, over the past year, the NIH has made some progress. One of the victories included designating people with disabilities as a population with health disparities. The policy narrowly passed after an advisory committee (that did not include anyone with a disability) initially dismissed the proposal." #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs "Without adequate accessibility measures, support, and resources, disabled researchers face challenges in fully participating in academic activities and accessing opportunities for advancement", write Weaver and Jackson. "It is crucial to counteract these barriers by implementing proactive measures that prioritize accessibility, support, and equity for disabled individuals in research and academic environments."

Within days, she had drafted a simple statement of children’s human rights, which she then shepherded through the League of Nations. In 1924, after considerable debate, Jebb’s pioneering statement was adopted as the Geneva Declaration on the Rights of the Child.
