Marketing in a charity has taught me a lot. Here are a few of the challenges a marketer faces working in a children's charity context... - Marketing to multiple audiences on multiple fronts with multiple funnels at the same time - Different emotional drivers for each audience - Understanding the role of altruism in decision making - Handling very sensitive subject matter and ensuring brand tone is on point - Balancing the requirement for sensitivity with the need to convey messages that evoke challenging emotions and provoke a sense of urgency You must also be extremely resourceful and reactive to a fast changing environment in which unexpected opportunities must be capitalised upon Finally, managing our marketing budget has an extra layer of emotional responsibility as every £ has been donated with the trust that it will be spent optimally to make real impact for the families the charity supports. Charity marketing keeps you on your toes that's for sure. ♻️ If you think this post could help someone in your network please give it a share. 👋 Hi there, my name is Ben - I post about customer focused, purpose-led marketing strategy and positive leadership. ➡️ Follow to stay connected. 👀 Keep an eye on your competitors, but don't obsess about what they're doing. Because you may still find opportunities in spaces they seem to have all sewn up. Years ago, a competitor to one of our nonprofit clients landed a high-profile celebrity spokesperson. 🙎♀️ The celebrity’s family had been personally impacted by the cause and was actively promoting the other non-profit. Raising awareness of important causes is a good thing for everyone—but my nonprofit client also had an important role to play in supporting this cause. I worried there was no way we could “compete” with the celebrity spokesperson and get our message out. But guess what? We did, and we still do. 🎉 In this case, the competing nonprofit didn’t fully utilize the celebrity spokesperson in their website and marketing. This left us with a window of opportunity to communicate the important work our client was doing in this space—and send more donations in our direction. How? Consistency is key. #googleadvertising #competition #strategy

An Inspiring Evening of Impact and Possibility - Children in Need: The Power of Storytelling to Ignite Change and Drive Impact for Your Charity We couldn’t have been more excited to see CPotential and one of their beneficiaries, Emily, featured on The One Show and BBC Children in Need last Friday evening. Her bravery and commitment are truly inspiring, and we’re so proud to have played a part in raising awareness for such an incredible cause with a promotional video for the charity. As we reflect on this moment, we’re reminded of something fundamental: great storytelling is at the heart of every successful charity campaign. But we also know it’s not always easy to create the kind of compelling, impactful content that truly resonates with your supporters. Whether you’re facing tight budgets, overwhelmed with time constraints, or struggling to break through the noise of a crowded market, the challenges of charity marketing are real. That’s where we come in. At Crispy Dog, we understand the unique challenges charities face—whether it’s reaching new audiences, boosting donor engagement, or simply standing out in a competitive fundraising landscape. We specialise in creating video and visual content that not only tells your story but inspires action, builds trust, and deepens connections with your community. Here’s how we can help: · Maximise limited resources: We work efficiently to create high-impact videos that fit your budget and time frame, ensuring you get the most value out of every campaign. · Cut through the noise: With attention spans shrinking and donor expectations growing, we help you craft messages that cut through the clutter, creating content that stops people in their tracks and encourages them to engage. · Drive donations and action: Whether it’s through emotional storytelling, showcasing the direct impact of donations, or motivating supporters to act, we create visuals that drive results and make your mission unforgettable. If you’re a charity or nonprofit looking for a partner to elevate your content, amplify your reach, and make a real impact, let’s talk! Together, we can create videos that inspire, engage, and ultimately move people to action. Do you speak at, speak to, or speak with your donors...? I think this is one of the common mistakes we can make as fundraisers and charities. We can be so passionately focussed (in a well intentioned way) on the cause for which we serve that we run the risk of missing the mark in communication and marketing, we end up building content from the inside out not the donor back. I've seen charities and not-for-profits end up speaking at their donors with a well curated message that ticks all the boxes on impact reporting, hero stories and dollar handles but we miss connecting with the donor. Or, we end up speaking at our donors in a fashion that feels far more directive than it does inclusive and often leaves donors feeling overwhelmed, overburdened and creates a transactional relationship as opposed to a transformational relationship. The key with fundraising is to learn how to speak with your donors. To create relationships with a purposeful outcome. To understand that fundraising is in one part self-centred and the other part cause-driven means we can create content that both inspires and engages whilst drives outcome and retains a sense of brand and cause consistency. Learn the art of speaking with your donors. It's the evolution of messaging you need in todays fundraising landscape. #fundraising #theeasywaytogive #charitabl. #fundraisingtraining #marketing

Don’t Just Ask for Donations, Tell a Story.. The way to purse strings runs through the heart. Charity Water has mastered the art of storytelling marketing. Their campaigns not only raise awareness about the global water crisis but also forge deep emotional connections with their audience. By sharing powerful stories of impact, transparency, volunteering, and community transformation, they inspire action, build trust, and cultivate a loyal community of supporters. Sankara Eye Foundation USA employs a similar approach, raising funds in the US to combat curable blindness among the poor in India. This storytelling method has proven incredibly effective in driving donations and creating lasting change. Here are the key lessons from Charity Water’s storytelling success: 1. Share Impact Stories: Highlight how donations have made a tangible difference. 2. Be Transparent: Show where the funds go and how they’re used. 3. Engage Volunteers: Feature stories of those who give their time and effort. 4. Highlight Community Transformation: Showcase the broader impact on communities. Don’t just ask for support; tell a story that resonates. If you are a nonprofit, I can support you pro bono by creating a storytelling architecture for your cause and providing a strategic framework. Drop me a message. To get updates on my cohorts and workshops on the art of storytelling, join via the link shared in the comments. #Nonprofits #NonprofitStorytelling #NonprofitMarketing #Branding

What makes good alt text? And what makes a good charity campaign? In my latest post (see comments), I talk about this campaign for RNIB and why it captures pretty much everything you're *not* supposed to do with alt text. To me, it's surprising RNIB ran with it. I also look more broadly at the challenge of charity advertising after years of corporate purpose. "How do you stand out in a landscape where commercial brands have planted their flags so firmly on tear-jerking stories, emotional poetry, social causes and timelapse birth-to-death dramas?" I think ad agencies have a valuable role to play, but it's a tough sector where many factors and audiences have to be taken into account. You can't just cut and paste the purpose playbook back onto charities, because the stakes are higher and the sensitivities are greater. #purpose #brandpurpose #thoughtsonwriting #theroadtohell

You don’t have to “move mountains” to make a difference! Sometimes, we get stuck thinking our progress has to be huge. If you ask me, you don’t necessarily have to volunteer for hours on end, donate your paycheck, or organize charitable events. Of course, it’s super helpful if you CAN support in that way. But the truth is, not everyone has the time, energy, or money to be at the forefront of social change movements. So if you can relate to feeling like you aren’t doing “enough”... I want to tell you something! You make a difference simply by tuning in. You make a difference by following your favorite philanthropic organizations on social media. You make a difference by sharing the link to fundraisers, even if you don’t have the money to donate. You make a difference by listening to a social change podcast. And thinking about the ideas shared. You make a difference by telling others about the issues you care about. You make a difference by voting. So today, I encourage you to become part of a community you believe in… And a friendly reminder that it’s okay to do it virtually, or in a more hands-off way. Small steps still make a big difference. (In fact, it’s the thing that does…) #socialchange #marketing #leadership

"Beautifully said! Charity is such a powerful force, and it's often the simplest actions that create the biggest ripple effects. Volunteering time, raising awareness, and contributing to trusted causes are small yet impactful ways to give back. It’s inspiring to see a call to action that reminds us all of the importance of coming together to make a difference. Thank you for sharing this important message, Areoye!
