Aligning technical and business architectures within government finance projects is crucial for their success. Which means accurately defining these terms, understanding the purpose of each type of architecture, and recognizing their interactions and interdependencies, is a non-negotiable. Linda Finley you’ve started something … Had exactly the same conversation with Mario Michaels in a podcast recording with him this week. There’s a part of me that suspects it’s been the IT community that mostly hire the role of an Enterprise Architect - to ensure that technology is fit for the enterprise - and that’s become the mainstream reality. Although tech is a huge part of an organisations operating model and it needs to be effectively deployed into the enterprise .. the real impact of an Enterprise Architect is when the role starts with the Enterprise and facilitates and cocreates with product leads, service designers, people leads, and IT analysts, architects and engineers (and dare I say paying customers) to design better enterprises. Who sponsors the EA role (COO, CIO, CDO, CSO) and where the starting mindset of the EA sits (enterprise or tech) will result in different understanding and intentions of the role. I’m jumping around, clapping and cheering on this definition - recognising that to do it well takes building bridges, joining dots and giving many experts the chance to contribute to the best architecture for the enterprise #enterprisearchitecture #ITarchitecture #businesssuccess

Hang it in your office. #EA #ENTERPRISEARCHITECTURE Enterprise Architecture is the architecture of the enterprise, not its information systems. It describes the company's architecture as a whole, and consequently that includes (but it is not limited to) the architecture of its Business and the IT that supports it. And just to make it extra clear: NO, its not just the set of both "Business architecture" and "IT Architecture". It is the architecture of what connects these to the company's purpose (its mission) and the strategy to achieve it. Agree, "Enterprise Architecture is the architecture of the enterprise, not its information systems." Somedays earlier, I've made this L-AC2D model for EA's personality characteristics: https://lnkd.in/e9eRaV6A, yes, measuring EA is not the information systems specific, but more soft sides...

Amen to this. One of the worst things in the history of EA is to have the function reporting to the IT function, if it does it is not really EA at all.

I think that shifting from "architecture" to "systems being architected" helps reasoning in this case. There are more than 2 systems there. "IT" already is an aggregated system (application, infra, codebase, perhaps engineers and other systems), as well as "Business" (products, organisation, clients and other systems). Combining 2 into "Enterprise" feels kinda unsatisfying. Combining all systems into one, i.e. to recognize important interconnections between their elements, makes more sense to me. Everything is a system and they all are interconnected. It is important to find cohesive clusters as much as it is important to implement good contracts between those clusters. I am just not sure that "IT" and "Business" are clusters that really encapsulate well. It resembles me the layered architecture with technical layers, because I can see "IT" is a technical layer - not a domain within Enterprise, because every aspect of a business is connected with IT nowadays, the coupling is strong, therefore something wrong in the topology.
