Sustainability Update: May 2024 Highlights 🌍🌿 🌱 Carbon Market Evolution: The voluntary carbon market is enhancing integrity and transparency. New guidelines aim to ensure carbon credits truly contribute to reducing emissions, crucial for credibility and effective climate action. 🌀 Climate Adaptation Urgency: Without robust climate adaptation strategies, up to 4.4% of global GDP is at risk annually. Developing economies are particularly vulnerable, underscoring the economic importance of adaptation. 🌳 EU Regulatory Impact on Sustainability: Over 50,000 companies will soon report their environmental impact due to the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. This move encourages more nature-positive corporate strategies and innovations in environmental data technologies. ♻️ Coffee Grounds as a Resource: Research highlights a new use for used coffee grounds—reducing agricultural contamination. This innovative approach turns waste into a valuable resource, addressing environmental issues. 🌞 Solar Energy Innovations: Notable solar projects include Manchester City's large-scale solar panel installation and a significant solar farm in the Arizona desert with battery storage, enhancing green power availability. These trends not only address pressing environmental issues but also integrate sustainability with broader economic and corporate goals. Let’s keep pushing for innovations that lead to a sustainable and prosperous future. 🔗 Engage with us on how we can make a collective impact! #Sustainability #ClimateAction #RenewableEnergy #CorporateResponsibility #EnvironmentalInnovation

Green Energy, Green Economy, Green Opportunities 🔋💸 By Nicholas Fordyce, Communications and Publications Manager at GreenCape The building blocks of any economy are the same: To power an economy, we need sources of energy. To grow our community, we must provide food and other resources. We need infrastructure to supply and distribute water and sanitation services. We require a waste management system which can capture, process and safely dispose of, or clean, the waste we generate. And for all of the above, we require modes of transportation. However, not all economies are built the same. For far too long people have pursued a form of economy, a linear “take-make-waste” model based on the extraction and consumption of limited fossil fuel resources. This has gradually plunged us into a number of crises including the global climate crisis, the 6th extinction, resource availability crises, landfill airspace short ages and significant widespread inequality. Globally, there is now an urgent trend towards transitioning to alternative ways of operating. 🇪🇺 EU Sustainability Promises and Statements from von der Leyen's Political Guidelines Ursula von der Leyen, who has been re-elected as President of the European Commission, outlined several sustainability commitments and statements. Below is a summary of the key sustainability initiatives she proposed in her Political Guidelines: 🌳 Environment Commitment to the Green Deal: the promise to continue implementing the Green Deal’s existing legal framework for 2030. 90% Emissions Reduction by 2040: this target will be enshrined in the European Climate Law. European Oceans Pact: creating a new pact that will focus on the blue economy to promote the sustainability of ocean resources. Biodiversity Commitments: upholding international biodiversity commitments, such as the Kunming-Montreal Agreement. 💡 Technology and Energy Investment in Clean Tech: through the NextGenerationEU initiative, significant funds are planned to develop and deploy innovative clean technologies. Investments in Clean Energy: promise for increased funding for clean energy infrastructure and technologies to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources. 🏢 Business Streamlining Business Operations: aims to make business operations easier and faster with less bureaucratic reporting. This will be particularly interesting in light of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which require increased sustainability reporting. Clean Industrial Deal: plans for a new initiative to support competitive industries while transitioning to sustainable practices. Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act: aimed at supporting companies in their journey towards decarbonisation. 🚃 Mobility Sustainable Mobility: plans to simplify the shift to sustainable travel options. Role of E-Fuels: a contentious statement about the importance of e-fuels in achieving climate goals and amending the 2035 ban on selling CO2-emitting cars to incorporate this technology. ⭕ Circular Economy Circular Economy Act: this new act will focus on creating market demand for secondary materials and establishing a single market for waste, promoting recycling and reuse. Chemicals Industry Package: an ambiguous statement about simplifying the REACH regulation to enhance competitiveness while protecting health and the environment, and “provide clarity on” forever chemicals. 👩🌾 Agriculture and Food Vision for Agriculture and Food: ensuring the competitiveness and sustainability of the agricultural sector by rewarding farmers who preserve biodiversity and work towards decarbonisation. 🌊 Climate Preparedness European Climate Adaptation Plan: developing comprehensive risk assessment and planning strategies to prepare for climate impacts. European Water Resilience Strategy: ensuring water security and resilience in response to climate change. ⏩ Are there any specific areas you believe need more focus or improvement? #Sustainability #GreenDeal #ClimateAction #CircularEconomy #EU

WorldGBC says by prioritising sustainable built environment policies, a number of key issues across the EU could be resolved, including energy security. The building sector makes up 40% of Europe’s energy demand, 80% of which is from fossil fuels, but accelerating the energy efficient renovation of buildings would decrease reliance on fossil fuels while decreasing energy bills for millions of Europeans. #sustainable #hvac #healthybuilding #healthybuildings #decarbonisation #decarbonization #energytransition #energysecurity https://lnkd.in/e94TDxSp

What's your "carbon competence"? Take the quiz and find out. It's from a study that tested whether the average person knows enough about which actions can make a difference in reducing their carbon footprint to actually make the right choices. The results? Not good—which speaks to a lot of things, including the need for public education and reporting standards. See how you score (the link for the quiz is at the bottom of the article)... https://lnkd.in/enUQD4He #sustainability #climateaction #foodwaste
Researchers designed a test of “carbon competence.” Pretty much everyone failed.
