How overwhelmed are manufacturing supply chains currently? Here's what caught my eye this past week: → New EPA rule mandates major chemical companies, including 3M and Honeywell, to significantly reduce toxic emissions at 200 US plants, with implementation to cost the industry about $522 million with an annual maintenance cost of $194 million. → UK postpones post-Brexit port inspections again, while trade groups voice concerns over the uncertainty ultimately risking higher food prices and logistical nightmares for businesses dealing with EU goods. → Food companies are facing compliance challenges with implementing enhanced tracking to prevent food contamination. The upcoming FDA traceability rule is set to take effect in 2026. → Russian forces targeted the Pivdennyi port in Odesa in a strategy to undermine Ukraine and its trading partners' stability, destroying grain storage facilities intended for Asia and Africa. → China retaliates to US tariffs and has imposed a 43.5% import duty on US propionic acid, crucial for animal feed and pesticides. With rising tensions everywhere, what is the best way for manufacturers to handle the current disruptive environment? They need to detect early, communicate to customers proactively and monitor the situation continuously. To do this, you need end-to-end visibility of your supply chain. Visibility is possible when you: → Digitize procurement workflows. → Monitor the external environment. → Have one-touch access to all data. _________ What have you done to increase visibility in your supply chain this year?🤔

In the past few weeks, I’ve mentioned that we have excess production capacity, and that raised quite a few questions… 👇 The most common one was: “But Harrie, how can a growing company like yours have excess production capacity?” That’s a more interesting question than you might think. It’s not as simple as just having larger facilities that we still need to fill. It’s more complicated than that. Here’s the situation: about 10 to 15 years ago, it was easier to trade with different countries and regions. You could export from China to the U.S., or from the Netherlands to South America without much hassle. But now, it’s become much harder. The world is dividing and each region has its own set of rules and regulations. Take the EU and the U.S. for example. Just in the area of food, the EU has much stricter rules. When it comes to chemical substances like detergents, you can imagine that the regulations are even tougher. The global demand for detergents continues to rise across various industries. So, you have two options: either try to meet all the different regulations everywhere, or produce locally, so you can comply with regional laws and avoid the need to export or import. This also happens to be a more sustainable approach. We chose the latter option. Now, we have production facilities around the world. We produce detergents in the U.S., South America (including Brazil), the Netherlands, Spain, Poland and in various countries across Asia. By spreading supply and demand globally, we can produce a lot in different locations. This has left us with excess capacity in some areas where demand is still growing. Our production facilities in the Netherlands, as well as in the U.S. and South America, have space available to help other companies produce their detergents, including packaging. So, that’s the story behind our search for companies looking for production lines. By spreading out, we’ve ended up with extra capacity. Once again, if you know a company that could use our help, send me a message! I would like to chat about this 😁

The countdown has begun! In less than 100 days, the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will reshape trade for products linked to deforestation. 🌳 Don’t wait—ensure your supply chain is compliant and aligned with EUDR standards! 🌱 You as an importer or exporter are responsible for ensuring compliance. Non-compliance can lead to goods confiscations, demurrage charges or even fines of up to 4% of your company's EU-wide turnover! We are here to support you with understanding if your products will be subject to the new regulation.

Protectionism Vs. Open Market presents a significant challenge in international trade. Finding the right balance is crucial, with long-term implications. The food industry, a critical sector, requires protection for local producers. However, there are retaliatory costs to consider. In North America, interdependence is key. Protecting one sector at the expense of others due to potential retaliation demands careful consideration. Being the producer of choice is vital. By focusing on lowest cost and best quality, we can reap long-term benefits. Developing competitive advantages in specific areas and trading where weaknesses lie allows us to maximize opportunities in both scenarios. #Protectionism #OpenMarket #InternationalTrade #FoodIndustry #CompetitiveAdvantage
