I spoke at the Caleb University Disruptive Innovation Conference #CUDIC to the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (CoPAS) on the topic of Leveraging Technological Innovations to Create the New Normal with a special emphasis on Artificial Intelligence. In the first of a two-part entry i examine the old normal and break down how technology is redefining the new normal even in higher education where teaching has to move from lower order to higher order thinkkng Take a listen.

The good news? 👍 Universities have an impressive array of novel ideas and technologies that can be licensed by others to solve real-world problems. The bad news? 👎 Tapping into a university’s intellectual property (IP) catalogue can be a confusing and cumbersome process. Which is why too many of these amazing solutions from faculty and staff inventors sit dormant on a spreadsheet. To fix this long-standing problem in academia, our tech transfer team within the 1819 Innovation Hub prioritized three strategies: 1) We hired a dedicated expert to serve as the bridge between industry and the university on all things IP. His name is Patrick Brown ([email protected]), and his sole focus is to help companies of all sizes access IP from UC. 2) We digitized the university’s entire IP catalogue to make it easier for others to see it, understand it and ultimately use it. 3) We partnered with a highly innovative product development firm here in Cincinnati, Kinetic Vision, to bring our digitized IP catalogue to life. Below is a picture of Lucy, our new AI-powered avatar located at 1819. How did Lucy the avatar come to be? The Kinetic Vision team converted the university’s IP catalogue into a small language model and then trained an avatar—via their Smarthelp platform—to bring these patented technologies to life. Lucy can tell you everything you need to know about available technologies originating from UC. As I think about my kids’ education, it's striking to see them studying a curriculum that's remarkably similar to what I experienced over 30 years ago. This raises a pressing question for all of us as parents: What does the future of education hold? Thrilled to have completed the Emerging Technologies Management Program at the University of California, Berkeley organized by MBZUAI (Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence) , an experience that brought together a dynamic group of professionals from diverse fields. This program provided a unique opportunity to immerse myself in the forward-thinking ecosystem of Silicon Valley, gaining a deeper understanding of the transformative role of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in reshaping industries and redefining leadership paradigms. This experience was truly inspiring as it provided us with the opportunity to visit some of the leading organizations in the field of Technology and AI, such as NVIDIA , Amazon Web Services (AWS), Autodesk , C3 AI, and Mayfield Fund, which are at the forefront of driving innovation and shaping the future of technology across industries. A note from my experience with innovation: Since my young scientist era, I have known society to seek only a “finished” product with little consideration for the journey it took to achieve the milestone innovation. Having to build on science projects and re-enter them the following year. Minimum viable products rule the research and development space in the technology industry, as these are rewarded even in the Hackathon space. Sometimes it doesn’t meet the deadline, but it doesn’t mean the innovation should die. Furthermore, we can’t hand our world over to #AI through our increased dependence on it. We need to make STEM great again by rewarding and encouraging problem solvers who are for the “method”, for it is our creativity that makes us #superiorintelligence even amongst #generativeAI companions. I recall a classroom discussion where students already in the work environment related the lack of consideration for complex technological processes from business. I couldn’t disagree with this. So I created this post to stand up for these next generation problem-solvers. Fast is good. Understanding the research and development space and it’s nuances is better! There is competitive power in adopting new technology and following trends but there is greater competitive power in leading through innovation. Please give innovation and innovators the consideration, encouragement and reward they deserve!

More new technology is being developed at Morgan State University than ever before, and this is no accident. The university’s Office of Technology Transfer is actively working towards making Morgan State the first HBCU to receive its R1 designation. What does that mean? The R1 designation is awarded by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education to universities with the highest levels of research activity. R1 institutions are required to spend at least $50 million on research and grant a minimum of 70 research doctorates annually. Currently, MSU holds the classification of an R2 research institution and was officially recognized as Maryland’s leading public urban research university by the General Assembly in 2017. As an R2 institution, MSU invests nearly $5 million in research and awards around 20 doctorates annually. Achieving the R1 designation could result in significant federal funding and other valuable benefits. The University followed up last year’s record number of 13 patent awards with a strong start this year. It has already acquired three new patents during the first two months of 2024. Overall, Morgan State has been issued 32 utility patents, and they do not plan on stopping any time soon. Some current research projects at Morgan State include examining the ethical implications of AI in social work, exploring approaches for sustainable shellfish aquaculture, implementing LIDAR for enhanced highway safety, and improving communication among “internet of things” home devices.
