🚨 A recent lawsuit from California table grape growers challenges the approval of the Systems Approach protocol for Chilean grape imports, casting a shadow over an otherwise promising season for Chile. 🌱 Approved in June after over 20 years of collaboration, the protocol aims to ensure the safe importation of Chilean grapes into the U.S., with shipments expected by November. 🤝 Dragomir Lujbetic from Uvanova and Víctor Catán from Fedefruta expressed confidence in the rigor of the protocol, emphasizing that it offers robust safeguards for U.S. producers. 📊 The protocol includes a comprehensive monitoring process, and Catán believes the lawsuit won't derail its approval. https://lnkd.in/eJCAp3eE #ChileanGrapes #Agriculture #Trade #SystemsApproach #Phytosanitary

A great step to closing the country of origin loophole. Now on to #organic grain to tighten import transparency. South Africa's wine industry is quite remarkable in terms of efficiency and productivity. Despite having around 2,300 wine grape producers, which might sound like a lot, these farms are spread across a relatively small portion of the country's total agricultural land. The fact that only about 4% of South Africa's agricultural land is dedicated to grape and wine production is fascinating because it highlights the high yield and effectiveness of these vineyards. The wine industry in South Africa has undergone significant advancements and improvements in recent years, leading to higher-quality wines that are competitive on the global market. This combination of efficiency, innovation, and quality has helped South Africa's wine sector thrive despite its relatively modest share of agricultural land dedicated to grapes and wine production. #grapefarms #winefarming #agriculture #farming #youngfarmer

📈 Exciting Growth in Vietnam's Shrimp Exports! 🦐 Vietnam's shrimp industry is making waves, experiencing strong growth in the first five months of the year. Alongside catfish, tuna, crab, and crustaceans, shrimp is one of Vietnam's top five seafood products driving export growth. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), shrimp exports reached USD 1.3 billion, accounting for over 30% of the seafood export value and showing a 7% increase compared to the same period last year. Vietnam is now the world's second-largest shrimp exporter, following China, with white-legged shrimp leading the market. The growth is primarily driven by the Chinese market, now Vietnam's largest shrimp importer, surpassing the US. Other markets like the US, Canada, the UK, and Russia also saw significant increases in shrimp export values. However, challenges such as political conflicts, global economic downturns, and high production costs remain. Despite these hurdles, Vietnam's shrimp industry continues to thrive. Read more about this exciting development in Aquaculture Magazine. Did you know that the Global Seafood Alliance is preparing a new standard? The Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) has been working hard on its new “Climate Action and Sourcing (CAS) Vanguard Standard”. As reported by the entity, this new standard is an initiative created to highlight producers who are leaders in the seafood industry, who go beyond what is expected of them and incorporate leading-edge innovations or best practices associated into their businesses. The CAS Vanguard Standard is a “Best Aquaculture Practices” (BAP) certification standard and would be applicable to feed mills, farms and seafood processing facilities. It was developed to address the broader footprint of farmed seafood products, in particular their carbon footprint and other impacts associated with the production feed ingredients. Those who wish to access this certification must comply with a responsible supply of marine and plant ingredients for the manufacture of feed, including those from fish processing by-products, in addition to having certified sources and including plant ingredients that are deforestation and conversion free (DCF). Additionally, facilities must demonstrate a decrease in their carbon footprint over time by reporting data related to Greenhouse Gas Emissions, selection and consumption of energy sources, and water use, among other aspects. The standard was designed to promote continuous improvement and encourage farmers to seek products from Vanguard-certified facilities throughout the supply chain. This in turn will lead increasing quantities of ingredients certified to responsible sourcing standards. This program was recently submitted to public comments. #aquaculture #certification #salmon #globalseafoodalliance #bap #bestpractices #salmonfeed #aquaculturefeed
