On 27th September 2024, I completed an incredible one-month voluntary internship at Shearn Delamore & Co. where I had the privilege of working in the Dispute Resolution Department under the guidance of Ms. Nik Azila Shuhada. Her supervision, mentorship, and constant support made this internship a truly enriching experience, and I am deeply grateful for her insights and encouragement. During this time, I was fortunate to witness firsthand the dynamics of court proceedings, including hearings at the Court of Appeal involving shipping and maritime matters. It was inspiring to see partners from the firm presenting before the court, which provided me with invaluable exposure to real-world legal advocacy. Additionally, I had the chance to attend client meetings and assist my supervisor directly, gaining a closer look at how client relationships are managed. The tasks I was entrusted with—conducting research on directorship and drafting a letter of demand—sharpened my practical legal skills and deepened my understanding of the profession. A special thank you goes to Mr. Peter H. Santiago for allowing me to observe a cross-examination session at the Industrial Court. One of the biggest lessons I learned from him is the importance of staying grounded and approachable—no matter one’s seniority, it’s essential to connect and build relationships with everyone in the team. This internship has been incredibly meaningful, not only for the experiences gained but also for the relationships built. I would also like to extend my appreciation to my intern mates- Shaarini Thanaraj, Shafiyyah, Ashley, Venus, Chong, Hareesa, Shinnie, Isaac, Lavee, Ivy, Zohara & Angel, who made the journey even more memorable with their camaraderie and support. Though the internship was short, it was undoubtedly impactful as I prepare to embark on my second degree in Bachelor of Shariah Laws (LLBS) I’m excited for the future and look forward to applying everything I’ve learned.
