Rethinking Medical Device Recalls One of the challenges related to gaining experience when using a medical device in a time-constrained critical situation is the opportunities that present themselves. Simulation is an option, but I have yet to come across a simulation lab that focuses on make and model-specific issues and failures. So option B is to have individuals actively participate in the incident reporting and recall systems within their countries. In this instance, the manufacturer is proactively highlighting an issue that could occur with any device that is software-driven, to quote. “If initial FUNCTIONAL TEST fails………………………..” Sounds pretty straightforward, but if you put yourself in the shoes of the individual who has to make a call like this, surrounded by staff and colleagues, dealing with a critically ill patient, any help is better than none. Your active participation in the incident reporting and recall systems could potentially save lives. The point is that recalls such as these need to be shared, they need to be available to all the users, and they need to be easy to find. Hey Y'all! In case y 'all missed it, Novitas put out a reminder today on appropriate use criteria (AUC). Effective January 1, 2024, providers and suppliers should no longer include appropriate use criteria (AUC) consultation information on Medicare FFS claims. The AUC program required practitioners that order advanced diagnostic imaging services to consult AUC using an electronic Clinical Decision Support Mechanism (CDSM) tool when ordering these imaging services. However, claims containing AUC related codes with dates of service in 2023 and 2024 will continue to process. Codes include G1001 through G1024 and modifiers MA through QQ. CMS has not given a timeframe on when implementation efforts will recommence.
