♀ On International Women's Day 2024, we're delighted to share the story of Rachel Walker, Apprentice Accountant and her employer Richardsons Chartered Accountants, who are using OxLEP Skills' apprenticeship levy transfer to enrich the professional development of their staff. Through quality training, support and a diverse range of experiences, Richardsons fosters an environment where employees thrive. Rachel says: "Richardsons have been so supportive in aiding my learning and development. Everyone is so friendly and want you to be able to achieve your very best." Richardsons have worked closely with OxLEP Skills Apprenticeship Advisor Nikki Cooper, who has facilitated transfer of pledged apprenticeships levy funds from an Oxfordshire 'pot' of over £2.3M to support training and assessment of their apprentices. The OxLEP Skills apprenticeship scheme and levy transfer have had a significant positive impact on Richardsons: 🌟 Certainty and assurance: the ability to secure funding through the levy transfer provides the firm with certainty in planning and executing staff training programs, meaning that employees consistently receive top-tier training from esteemed training providers. 🌟 Benefits beyond cost savings: while the financial advantages are clear, the apprenticeship scheme has introduced additional benefits, including heightened awareness of developmental areas within the firm, which has fostered a conducive learning environment. 🌟 Essential role in staff development: quality and effective training facilitated by the apprenticeship levy has become a critical component of the firm’s employee development strategy, making it an indispensable aspect of nurturing talent. 🌟 Recruitment and retention: the ability to advertise substantial training as part of a role at Richardsons has had a positive impact on recruitment rates at the company. Not only has it helped with hiring but with staff retention too, helping to underpin staff loyalty and meaning staff turn over at the company is at an all time low. In tonight's #SOTU you will likely hear that #apprenticeships are a domestic policy focus from The White House. (More details including all things interagency #collaboration, #data, and #funding below.) BenchK12 has been honored to co-chair a working group on #educator apprenticeship data #infrastructure with The Pathways Alliance and the Ed-Fi Alliance (S/O Erin Mote and Lindsey Judd) that is making recommendations to the U.S. Department of Labor given their historic investment. (We're also cooking up some new technology in response to some needs we've heard over the past few weeks, so follow here or our company page for updates!) As you'll read in the executive order I've linked to here, none of this work can be realized without *tons* of *strategic* collaboration. Our working group will need the informed input and knowledge from a lot of folks in the coming months, so if you want to *meaningfully* contribute, let me know! Important note: As a for-profit company, it is not often that folks trust those with our designation into these spaces as a true collaborator. I believe that needs to change (multi-sector collabs #ftw!), but it is incumbent upon for-profit companies to be good actors in these spaces in order to earn our place. (Full transparency: This working group is unpaid work.) BenchK12 will always work to be that kind of company while I lead it. https://lnkd.in/gMyBZrrA

What a week this has been! New job started on Monday, 43rd birthday on Tuesday and Budget day on Wednesday - don't ask me which was my favourite! 😁 We are all digesting the information from Rachel Reeves yesterday and what it means to different areas of our professional and personal lives. Personally, as a parent to neurodivergent children, seeing the commitment to additional spending on SEND was a positive step but unlikely to start addressing the serious issues that the system has in supporting and delivering learning to these children (this is not the forum to talk about systemic change needed!) Professionally, changes in National Insurance will clearly have a huge impact for businesses across the country, especially the millions of SME organisations who will be left wondering how to budget for this increased cost on current employees and any future hiring plans. We can only hope that this doesn't lead to reduced job opportunities for people and put pressure on active employment levels (which many fear it could). There are already messages around how apprenticeships can be a way for companies to navigate around this (with the exemption for under 25's from Employer NI contributions) and, whilst this is true, the benefits of an apprenticeship are more than just a tax break. Plus, for an apprenticeship to work, employers need to understand what is required and not just what they are saving! Showing investment in development of your current people, building the skills you need for your organisation, adding new and diverse talent into teams - these are just some of the reasons to adopt and grow use of apprenticeships. So yes, apprenticeships can offer the Employer NI exemption benefit but they are so much more and I hope we can remember that as a sector. #apprenticeships #apprentify

Oh Rishi 🤦♀️ … 100,000 additional #apprentices in the next 6 years , you make it sounds so simple; Immediately for providers it means; * The need to have more assessors with relevant industries competence being paid competitive salaries plus Teaching staff with industry knowledge to contextualise off the job learning making it relevant to the sector. * Additional admin/business support staff to manage the employer relationships and increase in enrolments to process the countless forms still needed way & above a full time course enrolment. * End Point Assessment centres are already inundated with students with some providers seeing a 8-10wait for dates alone. Not forgetting the Skills Bootcamps, T-Level programmes , talk of PDQs & incoming HTQs they are setting up 🙆♀️ For Employers ; * More education on apprenticeship standards “ written by employers for employers “ is needed & what it means to them to develop the skills, knowledges & behaviours for their industry * Smaller employers need more visibility of the funding pledge and how they can bid for unused levy & more grants for taking on an apprentice beyond the £1k to help with wages and set up costs. It’s our SMEs that are driving the supply chain for the bigger businesses I champion apprenticeships everyday and being self employed in this area I welcome growth in the sector - but the right growth, with the right infrastructure to support successful apprenticeship to pipeline talent into businesses is going to be key. #conservative #apprenticeshipgrowth #therightgrowth? @HelenLRussell

This #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, we’re spotlighting the Institute for Local Government (ILG), a grantee-partner of our #BetterCareers initiative! ILG is leading statewide efforts to develop and expand public sector registered apprenticeship programs (RAPs) in California. RAPs are an “earn-while-you-learn” model that combines education with practical, on-the-job paid experience, mentorship, and certification. Bridge, ILG’s pilot initiative, aims to address California’s growing public sector workforce shortages and help more Californians from underrepresented groups gain new job skills and advance in the public sector. ILG shared: “We want funders to know that these programs are not about filling the coffers of Big Government — they’re about building community resilience, fostering diversity, and creating economic mobility for underrepresented populations...By investing in these programs, funders can help scale the apprenticeship model across California, to reach more communities, get more people ready to work, and strengthen local services statewide.” Learn more about how ILG is increasing racial and gender equity in public sector RAPs and how public and private funders should support this work in this new blog post: https://irvine.ly/4eDKt2f #Apprenticeships
