The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has launched an innovative crowdsourcing initiative aimed at identifying biases in large language models, a key aspect of generative artificial intelligence. Leveraging the concept of bug bounty programs, the DoD, in collaboration with ConductorAI, Bugcrowd, and BiasBounty.AI, is encouraging public participation (no coding experience required) to unearth systematic errors in AI systems. Running from January 29 to February 27, with a total prize pool of $24,000, this effort is part of the Pentagon's larger commitment to "responsible AI." This endeavor, endorsed by the Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO), not only seeks to mitigate risks associated with AI but also influences the Pentagon's AI policies and technology adoption. Following the success of this first round, a second bounty is planned. Additionally, the DoD has formed Task Force Lima to explore military applications of generative AI, signaling a significant step towards integrating advanced AI technologies in defense mechanisms while ensuring ethical and responsible usage. #ai #defense #dod #biasbounty #crowdsourcing #cybersecurity #aiethics #responsibleai #technology #innovation Source- https://lnkd.in/d5VpmdkU

The Pentagon is intensifying its efforts on big data and artificial intelligence (AI) but faces the risk of adversaries "poisoning" the data crucial for training AI, leading to potentially skewed algorithms that could be used in future conflicts. Jennifer Swanson, the Army's software acquisition chief, warns that adversaries might tamper with the training data, a technique known as "data poisoning." While Swanson believes current military data is safe, the threat could be significant in conflicts with near-peer adversaries. The challenge arises because machine-learning algorithms require vast amounts of data, and the Pentagon is working hard to curate, clean, and protect this data. The military plans to secure AI models in firewalled environments, with systems at Impact Level 5 or 6, to mitigate risks and maintain secure datasets. Despite Swanson's extensive tech experience, she acknowledges the uncertainties surrounding AI's reliability and how it continues learning, leading to unpredictability. The Army aims to establish secure machine learning operations and incorporate AI into its battlefield strategies, but testing AI's adaptability and potential vulnerabilities remains a challenge. The goal is to ensure AI does not deviate from intended outcomes, raising concerns about long-term reliability and security in battlefield applications. #ai #bigdata #datapoisoning #pentagon #machinelearning #militarytechnology #cybersecurity #defsecops #battlefieldAI #militaryinnovation Source- https://lnkd.in/gZBwA7xW

The Gladstone AI report identifies two primary dangers associated with advanced AI. First, it warns of weaponization risks, where AI systems could be exploited to carry out catastrophic attacks, posing severe national security threats. Second, it highlights the danger of loss of control, where advanced AI might surpass human control, leading to unintended and potentially irreversible outcomes. These risks are intensified by competitive pressures within the AI industry, where companies may prioritize speed over safety to secure market dominance. The report calls for proactive government oversight and regulatory policies, such as controlling the computational power used for AI training and requiring authorization for deploying advanced AI models, to mitigate these threats. #AIrisks #Weaponization #LossOfControl #AISafety #AIRegulation #GladstoneAI #NationalSecurity
