Art festivals & economic Growth? Mazda Art Festivals are more than just vibrant cultural events; they are powerful economic engines that drive growth and create myriad revenue opportunities across various sectors. When artists and galleries showcase their work at these festivals, they gain increased visibility, leading to direct sales and brand building that extend well beyond the event. Last year we had participation from 21 different states across India, and Local economies did thrive during the art festival, with tourism generating substantial revenue from flights, hotels, restaurants, and cab services. Art supply stores also saw a surge in business as both professional artists and hobbyists purchased canvases, paints, and other materials inspired by the festival. What we have created at Mazda Art, is an invaluable networking opportunity, leading to partnerships and commissioned projects that generate ongoing revenue. Mazda Art Festivals foster economic growth and create numerous revenue opportunities not only for artists or galleries, but also for local businesses, and related industries; from art supply to art education to art magazines --- all thrive and prosper together. Rishi's post has brought nostalgia to the fore, of our student days, of CulFest 1984. This was different in multiple ways. The festival cell was constituted in March itself and we had meetings pretty much every night. The first thing we did was to declare a goal - to have the highest quality inter-collegiate cultural competitions. This wasn't common amongst student festivals and isn't common even now. But setting up a goal has its challenges. The immediate question was: "How do various workshops and a professional night like Pankaj Udhas consistent with the goal?" Some folks argued that this isn't inter-collegiate competition, while others said that these will attract more colleges and hence help improve competition. The latter finally won the debate. We had detailed information about previous years' events. How many teams in each competition. That helped plan things. The planning was something extra-ordinary. If we had to have dance competitions, there will be many - solo/group, classical/folk and so on. What would happen if the number of participants is less than a threshold. We will merge this with some other competition. The threshold and what will happen was all pre-decided, something that I have never seen again. What would happen if it rains. Which Pandal events can be shifted to L7, the large lecture hall (we didn't have auditorium then). Can we shift the rest to the aircraft hangar by moving all the planes out. That was the level of details decided several months in advance. First time, alumni funds were sought. The budget for this edition was Rs 1.5 lakhs which was more than double of the previous highest. And there was no registration fee for the participants back then and everyone was provided food, stay, local transport, for free. For food, students were asked to "donate" mess-days. I could, for example, say that 2 days of food in the mess can be charged to my mess bill. And there were more "mess days" donated than needed for feeding all the teams. Modi-Xerox had just setup the first modern copying machine in Faculty Building and were trying to take away the business from the good old Hall 1 copier using the old technology. They were partners for copying what we called as "rag mags." Anyone could publish a daily report of the Culfest and 100 copies of that would be made free. I wrote a daily report under the pseudonym of "DSAN." I thought the name made it obvious who was behind the page but hardly anyone could figure that out (and I did try to create controversies). The registration desk had BBC Micros. Most students had never seen a computer in their colleges and here we were using computers for registration. The amount of learning was huge and has helped me throughout my career. आईआईटी कानपुर का टेम्पो HIGH था, है, और रहेगा.
DOWN MEMORY LANE ….. CULFEST ’84 Exactly 40 years ago, this weekend, we had one of the biggest adventures in organizing and hosting Culfest ’84 at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. This was the most important event of my tenure (1984-85) as General Secretary (Cultural), Students’ Gymkhana. The immediately preceding culfests were a mixed bag and we were determined to do something different, big and financially viable. We were ambitious – e.g. we invited legendary Femina editor Vimala Patil to lead a panel, but the ticket did not reach her in time (no internet then!) so that did not work out! But other things did: · The amazing cartoonist Mario Miranda conducted a cartoon workshop and was practically our cartoonist-in-residence during the festival · And the biggest highlight - a mega concert by Ghazal maestro pankaj udhas. We had people from all over Kanpur city massed at the Institute gate hoping to listen to his melodious voice, but only a fraction managed to attend the concert because of capacity constraints. We took a vow to run the festival events as per schedule, and managed that to a large extent. All this thanks to an amazing team: · My close friend and wingmate, Rakesh Chandra (whom we tragically lost some years ago) was the Festival coordinator. · Today he is known as the academic entrepreneur with the golden touch (Indian School of Business, Ashoka University to name just two!), but back then Pramath Raj Sinha was the Festival secretary. · Now Vice Chancellor of JK Lakshmipat University, Jaipur, but then keeping an eagle eye on the Finance was Dheeraj Sanghi. · Mohit Uberoi led the fund-raising effort (at that time a record) · Many others played an important role –Sanjiva Prasad, Waheguru pal Singh, Sudeshna Sinha, Bir Kapoor, Charanpreet Singh, Ashutosh Bijoor, Arun Ayyangar… Important folks were supporting us from the background including Sanjiv Puri, now Chairman & MD, ITC Limited, then President, Students’ Gymkhana, IITK! When I speak to student organisers at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, I often remember these times.

A theme park based on Indian culture could offer a vibrant, immersive experience celebrating the country’s rich heritage, iconic monuments, diverse cuisine, and traditional arts. The park could be divided into sections, each representing different regions of India, allowing visitors to explore the country’s cultural diversity in one place. Key Attractions: • Iconic Monuments: Life-size replicas or scaled versions of famous monuments like the Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, Konark Sun Temple, and Mysore Palace would transport visitors to these architectural marvels. Each section could include a historical narrative, showcasing the architectural styles and stories behind these monuments. • Cultural Experiences: Traditional Indian dance performances such as Kathak, Bharatanatyam, and Bhangra could be scheduled throughout the day, offering visitors a chance to witness India’s artistic heritage. Artisans could demonstrate crafts like pottery, weaving, and hand-block printing, providing interactive workshops for guests. • Cuisine: Food courts offering regional delicacies from across India would be a major highlight. Visitors could sample Rajasthani thali, South Indian dosas, Kashmiri kebabs, or Bengali sweets. The food areas could be designed to look like traditional bazaars, adding to the cultural immersion. • Themed Rides and Attractions: The park could include rides based on mythological stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, or folklore from various regions. Virtual reality experiences could take visitors through India’s famous festivals like Diwali, Holi, and Durga Puja. • Nature and Spirituality: Gardens reflecting India’s natural beauty—like a section inspired by the Mughal gardens or Kerala’s backwaters—would offer tranquil spaces. Temples and spiritual centers could give visitors a chance to explore Indian philosophies and traditions. Such a theme park would not only entertain but also educate visitors about India’s vast cultural landscape, making it a truly enriching experience for people of all ages.

𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘀 Festivals serve as powerful economic drivers in many parts of the world, particularly for rural artisans whose livelihoods are often closely tied to cultural and traditional celebrations. These seasonal festivities create unique opportunities for artisans, who produce handcrafted goods ranging from textiles and jewelry to home decor and ceremonial items. The surge in demand during these periods directly impacts the economic wellbeing of artisans, offering both short-term financial gain and long-term sustainability. Let's explore this more and understand how festivals have an economic impact on rural artisans: 𝟭. 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 Festivals often bring a significant rise in consumer spending, particularly on traditional and handcrafted items. From textiles like sarees and scarves to decorative items such as pottery, lamps, and jewelry, there is a strong demand for artisanal goods during festive seasons. 𝟮. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 The spike in demand during festival seasons leads to the generation of temporary jobs in rural areas, helping not only individual artisans but also their communities. Artisans often hire additional help to meet the increased demand for production, distribution, and packaging. This demand for labor creates opportunities for rural workers who might otherwise have limited employment options. 𝟯. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘀 Festivals provide rural artisans with access to broader markets through fairs, exhibitions, and e-commerce platforms. Many governments, NGOs, and private organizations organize handicraft fairs and exhibitions during festivals, where artisans can display and sell their products directly to consumers. These events provide vital exposure and often enable artisans to bypass intermediaries, allowing them to earn better margins. 𝟰. 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 Governments in many countries recognize the importance of supporting rural artisans during festivals. In India, for example, government programs under the Ministry of Textiles, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), and the National Handicrafts Development Program (NHDP) often provide financial assistance, market linkages, and promotional platforms during festivals. Artisans are invited to participate in government-sponsored fairs and exhibitions, where they can showcase their skills and products. Festivals provide a valuable economic opportunity that enables artisans to generate income, sustain their livelihoods, and promote cultural heritage. In many cases, these periods of heightened demand can account for a significant portion of their annual revenue. #artisans #weavers #festival #festivities #economy #madeinindia #vocalforlocal

Celebrating Onam in Tamil Nadu: A Lesson in Unity and Tradition Today, I had the pleasure of celebrating the vibrant Onam festival here in Tamil Nadu. It was a truly enriching experience, where people from diverse backgrounds came together to enjoy the festivities, share meals, and embrace the culture. Key learnings from this celebration: 1. Unity in Diversity: Onam is a reminder that festivals bring people from all walks of life together, teaching us the importance of togetherness and harmony. 2. Cultural Appreciation: Embracing and respecting different traditions enriches our own understanding of the world and strengthens our connections. 3. Festivities and Reflection: Festivals are not just about celebration but also about reflecting on shared values like gratitude, unity, and joy. 4. Inclusivity: Being part of such a culturally significant event reminds me how inclusive celebrations can build stronger bonds both in personal and professional lives. Experiences like this teach us the value of connecting with others on a deeper level, which can be vital for building meaningful relationships—be it in life or business. What’s one cultural celebration that has inspired you or taught you an important lesson?
