What's that smell? 😶🌫️ Surgical smoke from devices like electrosurgical units, lasers, and high-speed instruments can contain dangerous compounds like hydrogen cyanide and benzene. 😱 It also carries bioaerosols, viruses, viable cancer cells, particles, blood fragments, and bacteria🦠. Here are some best practices to ensure a safer surgical environment: 1. Use Smoke Evacuation Systems: • Always use a smoke evacuation system to capture and filter surgical smoke, even during minimally invasive procedures. • Position the smoke capture device (e.g., wand, tubing) as close to the surgical site as possible to maximize efficiency. 2. Follow Manufacturer Instructions: • Ensure all smoke management equipment and accessories are used according to the manufacturer's instructions for optimal performance and safety. 3. Handle and Dispose of Equipment Properly: • Used smoke evacuator filters, tubing, and wands should be handled with standard precautions and disposed of as biohazardous waste to prevent contamination and exposure. 4. Enhance Room Ventilation: • In addition to using smoke evacuation systems, maintain proper room ventilation to further reduce the concentration of airborne contaminants. Proud to say The University of Missouri Health Care-Capital Region Medical Center is smoke free! It has been for some time now! I was happy to write a letter to our state representees to mandate smoke free!!
Great post! After establishing surgical smoke procedures, ensure the development and enforcement of clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for smoke management, complemented by regular training of operating room staff. Nobody should be forced to inhale smoke from human flesh. 🤢
