Today is one of my favorite days of the year. Not because it’s May tomorrow and we are all hoping that the big yellow ball will finally make a prolonged appearance. No, because today is this year’s regional final of Young Enterprise UK. We have ten groups of young leaders of the future coming together to celebrate what they have learned and achieved over the last 7 months. In that time, they’ve set up businesses, real businesses, with P&L sheets and #marketing plans and #HR decisions to support the products have produced and sold. Yes, they’ve learnt about #commercial stuff and it has to be said at a speed that many corporate organisations would envy. As importantly, they’ve learnt 😎 how to work together, 😎 how to #resolve differences, 😎 how to utilise each others strengths, 😎 how to #overcome the hurdles that can occur in business. They’ve grown as young people and developed #resilience, drive and those all important ‘soft skills’ that are so needed across organisations. Have I got goosebumps? You bet I have. A huge thank you goes out to Joanna Hill and the team at University of the West of England for once again hosting this celebration of what young leaders can achieve when they are given the opportunity to show what they can do. Whilst there will be a winning team going through to the next round of this year's competition, they really are all winners. We may have a few businesses #leaders of the future in our midst today.

Whilst the data from this report is skewed to the US small business market, we see a similar pattern here in Australia. In a recent, anecdotal, article on Forbes, the top four contributing factors to small business failure were identified. In order, they were a lack of understanding of sales and marketing, inadequate preparation, insufficient effort and a lack of knowledge. I was recently in a conversation with a father who is in a top leadership position at a fast-paced, constantly changing, pressure-filled company. I asked, “Do your people feel like they are winning externally (work and home) and internally (how they see and feel about themselves)? How often do they experience winning, and can they celebrate the wins? He told me that in a meeting with his managers they discussed how despite a very challenging quarter with major debilitating sustained disruptions in technology, raw material supply and manpower issues, and project delays, they had their best quarter ever, but his management team did not recognize that they were winning. He then shared a discussion he had with a teacher while attending a parent-teacher conference with his 11-year-old son. The teacher had shown him his son’s test scores. The dots on the graph moved upward showing steady growth and improvement except for one dot in the middle that hit the bottom of the graph. Seeing the dot on the bottom he immediately demanded of the teacher “What happened here? Why did this happen?” The teacher, to her credit, immediately said something like, “You are focusing on the wrong thing. He had one rough day. Focus on where he was and is going--the wins, can you celebrate that?” I believe that a marketplace is where we give value and look for value in return, our ROI. This can be at home, business, team, child, or even within us. The cultures that we create within each of these marketplaces will determine the quality of our ROI. In my experience, cultures in business and home are greatly impacted by the lack of definition and clarity that we have around winning because of habits of thinking, that create three blind spots: 1-Our perceived urgency and distraction into the “doing the next thing. Like the management team who did not see their wins in overcoming obstacles, because their focus was on all that was still not done. 2-Our expectations of the distance we have to travel or the things we have to do before we can celebrate are too far away—like the drive to Disneyland…are we there yet?????? 3-The struggle we have with our identity around winning and celebrating ourselves and others. I have asked hundreds of people if they feel like they are winning, most say “no or not really”, and when I ask them how often they celebrate themselves with a “way to go, a high-five, or I am proud of you”, there is often silence. In my opinion, all of us crave to win more often in the things that matter most. Our ability to create the culture we desire in our marketplaces is often defined by our ability to identify and celebrate more often the small wins for ourselves and others.
