The United States makes up roughly 5% of the world's population, yet consumes  25% of the world's resources. The US produce enough food to feed the world but it wastes millions of pounds of perfectly good food yearly while 47 million people in the country face hunger. Overall, 47 million Americans lived below the poverty line, or 13.15% of the total population. Congressman Mike Johnson from Louisiana is the Speaker of the House and he represents the second poorest state in the Union with 18.7% of the population living in poverty. What should Speaker Johnson be concentrating his time on? He has been in Congress eight years. Mitch McConnell has been in the Senate 39 years and he represents the state of Kentucky with the fifth highest level of poverty of 16.6% of the population. What should Minority Leader McConnell be concentrating his time on? Poverty rates were highest in the states of:  Mississippi (19.58%) Louisiana (18.65%) New Mexico (18.55%) West Virginia (17.10%) Kentucky (16.61) Arkansas (16.08%) They were lowest in the states of: New Hampshire (7.42%) Maryland (9.02%) Utah (9.13%) Hawaii (9.26%). All 50 states have poverty and all 8 territories of the US have poverty. • Palau 24.9%                          • U.S. Virgin Islands 28%   •Marshall Islands 32% •Guam 33%       • Micronesia 41%                   • Puerto Rico 43% • American Samoa 51% • Mariana Islands 52.% The McDonald owner operator with 18 stores is grossing approximately $65,736,000! This owner operator is not able to pay a living wage? The most recent change for the national minimum wage was effective July 24, 2009 (or 14 years), increasing the federal minimum wage to $7.25. I'm a capitals, but I believe in equitable treatment and job opportunities with living wages. The minimum wage jobs are not meant for the majority of our middle and upper class youths. They are meant for the 47 million poor Americans, for minorities, for single parents, for immigrants, and all others who are defranchised from the benefits of the richest country in the world. The USA is the richest country in the world!!! Capitalist without check and balances is like a President, or Congress, or a Judiciary without check and balances. “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Capitalism is power. And we the people need to decided how much power it should have. Another, element in this equation is the lack of empathy we have towards the distressed in our society and in the rest of the world that goes hungry almost every day. How much is enough? Is greed really good? If you follow the rules, are you a suckered? Let our better angels guide us!

A California state law is set to raise fast-food workers’ wages in April to $20 an hour. Some restaurants there are already laying off staff and reducing hours for workers as they try to cut costs. California restaurants, particularly pizza joints, have outlined plans to cut hundreds of jobs in the months leading up to the April 1 wage mandate, according to state records. Other operators said they have halted hiring or are scaling back workers’ hours. “Pizza Hut was my career for nearly a decade and with little to no notice it was taken away.”
