🔈 Anthropology in Action is accepting submissions for our upcoming edition. ☄ We invite scholars, researchers, and practitioners to submit original research articles and shorter snapshots for Anthropology in Action’s overarching theme of 'Anthropology at the Frontiers'. 🤖 We are especially interested in critical engagements that challenge and update our notion of what it means to be human in the 2020s, such as digital transformations, including coexisting with non-human technology and ethical queries around AI, queer perspectives on temporalities and kinship, rethinking the role of traditional media and complicity in global violence, moral cosmologies and digital media, racial justice, reparation, and abolition, labor and automation, as well as new critiques on ecological sustainability discourses- including ‘green hushing’ and the covert harm of circular economies. ✍ At AiA we value public anthropological engagement with non-traditional formats. Therefore, we also welcome shorter pieces that grapple with media content and popular culture (nonfiction, fiction, podcasts, film, television shows, etc.) that shape contemporary social relations today. What a great episode from Matt Artz! I recommend it to everyone who wants to grasp what #customerinsights truly means. From my experience, even great customer insights don't guarantee users' voices will be included in #productdevelopment. As Jay Hasbrouck underlines, understanding internal stakeholders and their perspectives (and strategy visions) is also crucial. As strategists, we should emphasise and map all interactions with the product and within product development - to see it as a service. Service in which the people in the backstage are important in successful product implementation. Our role is to translate our findings into actions. Facilitating, supporting and sharing our experience and knowladge. Making data easier to digest. #datascience #servicedesign #anthropologyinbuisness #databasedinsights #KleffmannDigitalRS

Exploring Anthropology Beyond Academia: Redefining Consulting 🌐 Anthropology isn't confined to textbooks and research labs. It's a powerful tool shaping corporate landscapes. A good example of applying anthropology beyond academia can be found at ReD Associates, a consulting firm that illustrates this fusion, integrating anthropological insights into everyday business practices rooted in the humanities and social sciences by focusing on how clients understand their own experiences instead of the business interpretation of a “problem”, by better understanding it as a “phenomenon.” Anthropological methods offer nuanced and creative perspectives in the corporate world. ReD, for instance, seeks to understand the human condition by attempting to answer society’s questions applying participant observation, ethnography and data interpretation. They do this by critiquing the status quo, asking context-based and culturally relevant questions and imagining alternatives to innovate it in multiple topics, problematics and dynamics such as strategy, mental health, sustainability, among others. In the end, by embracing this interdisciplinary approach, anthropology beyond academia might be starting to unlock new avenues for innovation, growth and rather unconventional yet attractive professional paths for the business-oriented anthropology graduates! ReD's work is analyzed, described, explained and discussed in their podcast Phenomena, check out some insightful ways to engage with the business strategy world here: https://lnkd.in/eJ9GVpkX #Anthropology #UCLAnthropology #CorporateCulture #Innovation

I just finished reading an insightful article on the integration of anthropology into market research, and it resonated with me. The author, Autumn McDonald, beautifully explains how culture influences every interaction with a brand, and how the deeper understanding of human behavior offered by anthropology can strengthen market research. 🎯 As an anthropologist myself, I couldn't agree more! Anthropology provides a unique lens through which we can examine cultural contexts, going beyond simple trends or demographics. It acknowledges that every individual embodies multiple cultures, making human behavior far more nuanced. For market researchers to truly understand customer decisions, they need to embrace this complexity.
Unlocking Deeper Consumer Insights: The Role of Anthropology in Modern Market Research 🧠📊 In an era where data reigns supreme, it's easy to overlook the human stories behind the statistics. However, as this insightful Forbes article points out, anthropology is emerging as a powerful tool in market research, bridging the gap between numbers and the nuanced realities of human behavior. By integrating anthropological methods—like ethnographic studies and cultural analysis—into traditional market research, businesses can uncover the "why" behind consumer actions. This approach allows companies to understand not just what people are doing, but the cultural and emotional drivers behind those behaviors. Incorporating these deep, qualitative insights into your strategy can lead to more authentic connections with your audience, more innovative product development, and ultimately, more effective business outcomes. As we move forward in a complex global market, the fusion of data and human insight will be key to staying ahead. 🔍Unlocking Opportunity: Harnessing Anthropology for Real-World Impact🔎 Curious about the transformative power of anthropology outside academia? Discover "Bridging Opportunity Gaps in Hackney," an illuminating initiative by the UCL Ethnographic Insights Lab! In collaboration with Hackney Council, this project aimed to transform job prospects for young individuals within the borough. Armed with the tools of ethnographic inquiry, our researchers delved deep into the fabric of community life, conducting expert interviews with residents and community leaders to unearth invaluable insights. At the heart of our findings lies a paradigm-shifting concept: "Reaching In." By tapping into the rich reservoir of local knowledge and leveraging existing community networks, we've uncovered a goldmine of untapped potential. Through enhanced awareness and collaboration across diverse sectors, we're amplifying the impact of existing programs and nurturing a culture of empowerment and inclusivity. Our journey transcends the confines of Hackney Council, illuminating a generalizable insight. Institutions often imagine themselves as separate from the communities they serve. This misconception leads them to equate connection with ‘outreach’, ‘access,’ and overcoming ‘barriers.’ Our ethnography found that in reality, institutions such as Hackney Council are integral parts of the communities they serve, built out of social relationships between Council staff and residents. "Reaching in" is not merely a strategy but a philosophy—a rallying cry to recognize, nurture, and harness the profound social ties that bind us all. Join us in rewriting the narrative of community engagement. Explore opportunities for collaboration with the Ethnographic Insights Lab and redefine understanding within your organization.
