At the recent Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) conference, I had the privilege of participating in an insightful panel discussion on the intersection of anthropology and artificial intelligence (AI). Alongside colleagues Sonja Hodgson, Archana Shah, and Lance L. Larkin, we explored the potential of AI, its limitations, ethical considerations, and the crucial role anthropologists can play in shaping this burgeoning technology. Key Takeaways: 💡 AI's capabilities are vast, but we must understand its limitations, particularly with language models, to use it effectively and responsibly. 🧭 Anthropologists' expertise in understanding human behavior and culture is invaluable in guiding the development of ethical, inclusive AI solutions. 🤝 Cross-disciplinary collaboration and diverse perspectives are essential for responsible AI innovation that benefits society. 🌟 Anthropologists should embrace skills like design and data science to contribute actively to AI projects and advocate for ethical practices. As AI continues to evolve, anthropologists have a unique opportunity to shape its trajectory. By leveraging our strengths, collaborating across disciplines, and staying informed, we can ensure AI development is grounded in truth, represents diverse perspectives, and upholds ethical standards. great initiative - thanx for sharing! At IS IT A BIRD, we had an IIAB talk in the fall with the similar topic, and the (in my mind at least) catchy title of "AI and AI" (anthropological intelligence and Artificial Intelligence. https://www.isitabird.dk/talks/artificial-intelligence-and-anthropological-intelligence reach out for key take aways!

Very interesting. Still trying to get in tune with the approach of A.I in general and A.I and anthropology in particular. I also like what I see in the comment section. Checking everything soon.

So glad so many of us are thinking about this. I come back to two foundational pieces of our method and discipline: 1. the practice of doing ethnography, 2. the field of our participation and observation.
