India and Chess. The two words you wouldn’t usually expect to dominate global headlines.
But times have changed.
From the ancient game of Chaturanga that originated in India in the 6th century, to the modern-day chessboard, India has always had a deep connection with the game.
However, despite this rich history, we never truly held a commanding place in the world of “Shatranj” - except for one bright star, Vishwanathan Anand.
For decades, he was our lone flag bearer on the global chess scene.
But for the first time in history, India has clinched double gold in the Chess Olympiad, with both the men’s and women’s teams standing tall at the top of the podium.
The Indian women’s team, led by champions like Vaishali, Vantika, Divya, Harika, and Tania, secured an incredible victory by defeating Azerbaijan to grab the gold.
Meanwhile, the men’s team, with Gukesh, Arjun, and Praggnanandhaa, mirrored that triumph, dominating the competition and adding to India’s golden glory.
The sheer class, strategy, and resilience our teams showcased on the global stage is something the world will remember for years to come.
From having only one icon to producing an army of chess champions, India has truly arrived.
Jai Hind!
