This is #BannedBooksWeek. PEN America found that more than 10,000 books were banned in public schools during the 2023-2024 school year, nearly triple the previous year. Every student deserves to see themselves represented in books. While every parent has the right to choose the books their child reads, they do not have the right to make that decision for other parents. We all need to do our part and speak out against #bannedbooks https://lnkd.in/eTm3c2ec

While “books usually are challenged with the best intentions," for example, to shield children from “difficult ideas and information,” The American Library Association (ALA) notes that censorship itself can actually be quite harmful. Per the ALA, Banned Books Week (September 22-28, 2024) “brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to read.” In recognition of Banned Books Week, let’s discuss the benefits and importance of reading banned books. It looks like it is Open-Season on our School Children. ** Book bans which create barriers to both free-speech & critical-thinking in our School Children are on the rise in the USA. While…… ** There are no bans which might prevent mass-shootings of Children in our Schools, keeping firearms out of the hands of Citizens who are violent, mentally ill, lacking in knowledge of firearms laws, gun safety & proficient marksmanship. ** As a matter of fact….. — open-carry of firearms is widespread (how does the Secret Service, protecting a Presidential Candidate at a political rally, or a Policeman at a Grammar School, address a Citizen walking about while carrying a rifle and sidearm, with multiple magazines of ammunition, as is their right under state law?) — concealed-carry of firearms is now allowed in about 16 states — Bump-Stocks, which can enable a semi-automatic rifle to fire like an automatic rifle, have been approved by the SCOTUS — there are no limits on magazine capacity, nor frangible & cop-killer ammunition So……… We’re making it harder for our School Children to read ideas, which we fear might promote critical-thinking. But……. We’re making it easier for our School Children to become victims of mass shooters???
