This is actually a really great example of how you make product-driven state of the art rather than research-driven. That is, value-driven innovation. Recraft.ai started as a company that helps designers create images of consistent styles. So they had from the start focused on the problem: "Here is the style image, please generate vector graphics in that style." (I hope Recraft folks can correct me here if I am slightly misunderstanding the framing). It's a clear product proposition and narrow scope. It's clearly heavy on RnD, but by far not a "we'll create the best image generator model" research-focused company. Rather, it's a product company which brings specific value to specific people. And now after passing that phase they were able to become the best in a.more general task: image generation (and editing, though the benchmarks on editing aren't as widely accepted so hard to judge these in comparison with other companies and models). Now, I'm myself not sure why the company "pivot" happened but nevertheless it's a great story on product-driven innovation to me.
