AI and other automation technologies have huge potential to understand, redress - or exacerbate - different sorts of inequality. So they must be designed, developed and deployed consciously, with these different outcomes in mind - and we must aim for the good ones. We’ve been working with the Imperial maths squad to introduce (and use!) tech as part of the debate on tackling regional inequalities ahead of the General Election. There should be useful lessons and questions for those outside the UK too eg we must stop seeing technology as a tool or isolated domain and it demands cross-cutting policy intervention to bring out the best and manage the rest. With both main parties trumpeting the power of #AI and technology to deliver so much, our Disruption Index - published as part of our Pissarides Review funded by Nuffield Foundation gets to the heart of the serious challenges of that premise - and highlights how, poorly handled, technology adoption could widen regional inequalities. As trailed earlier this week - and now even more urgent in the throes of a #GeneralElection - we are delighted to be hosting a #LondonTechWeek lunchtime fringe event with Imperial College London on 12th June at their i-HUB in White City, with an expert panel discussing the DI. Aggregating data on investment, VC flows, infrastructure and skills, the DI provides a deep dive into the components of technological transformation, each region's readiness for it and the huge social and wellbeing consequences of it. 6moI could not agree with your comment more, Anna, about the need for cross policy thinking in relation to the evolution of game changing technologies. Also, that tech can either help reduce or exacerbate inequalities. What it will do is not "written in the stars". It is up to us to manage this in a holistic way to ensure "good", not bad outcomes.
