< From Inclusion to Talent Discovery & Retention — why Flexible Work Arrangements matter in Healthcare > Many healthcare workers are themselves caregivers as well, for young children or elderly parents, and sometimes both at the same time. Some colleagues have themselves battled serious illness such as cancer, and are rebuilding their health even as they rebuild their work identity. Each of us goes through different seasons of life, different journeys in life. There can be detours, and ups and downs. Progressive, supportive HR practices such as Flexible Work Arrangements — all this matters in the workplace, and especially in healthcare. It keeps the workplace open to folk across different backgrounds, different walks of life, different personal journeys. It helps us recruit and retain the full diversity and depth of talent and life experience that is Singapore. And because healthcare is fundamentally about humanity and human connection, it strengthens our care teams and our healthcare system, when we are able to draw upon a full breadth and depth of talent and life experience. This also involved helping them navigate to a better place before pushing your own agenda for better project outcomes. For us to achieve this, it also involves having a high quality of life for those who offer that care to the patients. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦. I am excited to share my recent work contributing to the Singapore Allied Health Workplace Learning and Support Framework, an initiative by the Ministry of Health (Singapore), and the Community Rehabilitation Transformation Workgroup. The Framework is based on five essential principles: 1. Universally Accessible: Ensuring that workplace learning and support are available to all. 2. Deeply Ingrained in Organizational Culture: Making learning and support part of the overall workplace culture. 3. Enhancing Professional Skills and Overall Well-being: Focusing on both skill development and worker well-being. 4. High Quality: Ensuring the learning and support provided are of high standards. 5. Subject to Continuous Improvement: Adapting to evolving needs of allied health workers and the community they serve. These principles aim to enhance workplace learning opportunities, provide structured support for career development, and foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement. The ultimate goal is to ensure high standards of practice through robust supervision and mentorship, creating a supportive environment where allied health professionals can thrive. This creates a space that leads to improved patient care and outcomes. NAPC held a really lively engagement session with members on ‘activation’ on 3 July discussing four questions in breakout groups. A positive change in activation for a person/patient can lead to positive changes in self-care behaviours which improves health and care outcomes and reduces demand on the healthcare system. Activated staff are more innovative in the workplace and attentive to their own health and wellbeing for the benefit of themselves, their patients and colleagues. Some of the ideas that were discussed were around the impact of personal circumstances or the diagnosis of a long term health condition on a person’s activation and also how people can be activated through a 'call to action' or a ‘nudge’ in their behaviour. Healthcare professionals can become more activated at work through helping patients as well as through having a good culture and leadership, supportive colleagues, constructive feedback and a simple thank you - which can all make a difference to everyone.
