We are pleased to announce that the next paper in our series of Healthcare and Life Sciences M&A Insights reports is out now, covering the Occupational Health market. According to the IPPR the UK economy lost £25 billion from lower productivity among people who were working through sickness, and £5 billion from absenteeism. To address these challenges, many workplaces now emphasise proactive, value-added services for employee wellbeing and performance, delivered both on-site and online. This shift has spurred growth in the Occupational Health market, attracting significant interest from financial investors and strategic acquirers. The long-term embedded contracts, increasing prioritisation of employee wellbeing and technology enhancing service delivery has led to consolidation and horizontal expansion in the M&A market. Our latest paper delves into these themes, exploring the M&A landscape, highlighting key transactions that are shaping the field, presenting selected case studies and providing a broader outlook for the sector. We explore these market themes, growth drivers, key transactions shaping the sector and a wider sector outlook within our report. A fast-growing health services business has unveiled plans to double its headcount by 2026. UK Independent Medical (UKIM) – based at Sunderland’s Rainton Bridge Business Park – is set to grow its staff base by 180, taking its total number of employees to 360 in two years’ time. The business, which was founded in 2003, initially offered independent medical assessments before diversifying into occupational health services, something it now delivers for clients operating in an array of sectors from sport to manufacturing. The rapid expansion of the occupational health services offered by UKIM, alongside continued growth in its original business area, is driving the company’s ambitious plans for development, which has been bolstered by the acquisition of two occupational health practices – one based in Carlisle and the other in Northamptonshire. The business intends to grow its base in Sunderland to support its growth, as well as expand its footprint across the UK, with plans to acquire more firms in different parts of the country. UKIM is also expanding its services, looking to support SMEs in embedding occupational health services. https://lnkd.in/gGmNy5rP

[Publication] 21 March 2024 The research article "Lessons from workplace health promotion efforts in Thailand" is published on The Lancet Regional Health - Southeast Asia. In Thailand, there have been significant efforts, both at the organization level and national level, to foster stronger health promotion in the workplace. Despite these efforts, the workplace health promotion programs are still limited, and the country continues to face a rising health burden of non-communicable diseases. To understand the challenges facing national effort to promote more workplace health promotion, the researchers conducted an extensive review and key informant interviews on the six national-level programs. The findings revealed four important lessons on the factors contributing to the development of health promotion in the workplace. 💼👩⚕️ Reflecting on the Vital Role of OSH in the Health and Social Care Sector I’m proud to look back on our work at Panteia as part of the study on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in the Healthcare and Social Care (HeSCare) Sector, commissioned by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) . Published last month, this research is critically important in highlighting key challenges and opportunities for improving working conditions in HeSCare—a sector essential to our well-being, and to society as a whole. The study underscored not only the high prevalence of work-related risks in the sector, including musculoskeletal disorders, psychosocial stress, and infectious diseases, but also the demographic challenges facing the workforce: 🔸 An aging workforce, with many healthcare workers nearing retirement, creates pressing questions about sustainability and the need for support systems. 🔸 A high percentage of women in the sector, who face unique risks and often juggle additional caregiving roles, underscores the importance of tailored OSH interventions. 📊 Why This Report Matters: This study provided a comprehensive overview of the sector, offering valuable insights into the systemic challenges faced by HeSCare workers and actionable recommendations for improvement. 1️⃣Data and Awareness: Strengthening data collection and awareness campaigns is crucial to fully understand and mitigate workplace hazards. 2️⃣Policy and Practice: The findings emphasised the importance of robust regulatory frameworks paired with practical, workplace-level interventions. 3️⃣Future-Proofing the Workforce: Targeted support for demographic trends—such as flexible work arrangements and advanced training—can ensure the HeSCare workforce remains strong and resilient. This research is a reminder of the essential role HeSCare workers play in our societies and the need to protect their safety and health. I encourage you to visit the report and reflect on how we can continue to support those who care for us. https://lnkd.in/egMAHPce #OSH #Healthcare #socialcare #WorkplaceSafety #Panteia #EUOSHA

"The employee of the future wants more from their employer” – so commented Peter Corfield at the Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN) tenth Annual Summit on Wednesday in a session on the increasing role of workplace healthcare. Timely, high quality support for employees is a valuable investment and employees are increasingly choosing to work where they can receive that support. Peter shared the results of our recent poll, showing: • Over a third of workers believe their employers have the greatest responsibility for their health • Nearly half of employees who have had more than a month off work cite work-related health issues • 7 in 10 employees have never been referred to occupational health • Over half of respondents believe their working conditions significantly impact overall health, which rises to nearly three-quarters of those aged 25-34 • 79% of employees believe the government should encourage companies to invest in occupational health via tax incentives • Employee wellbeing programmes return between £2 and £10 for every £1 spent Spire Healthcare Group plc continues to offer hospital care across its 38 hospitals but now provides occupational health, employee assistance programmes, mental health, musculoskeletal services and talking therapies, to help people stay in work, get back to work and stay safe in work, improving UK productivity. Vita Health Group Spire Occupational Health Thank you to Dawn Hodgkins for chairing and to all other panellists and delegates for a valuable discussion.
